Description
Small tree, usually reaching just 10-20ft in height.
Hardiness
Coffee is a hardy plant, but cannot be successfully grown where temperatures dip below 32F for any length of time. It may succeed marginally in subtropical areas. An optimum temperature range falls roughly between 65-80F.
Growing Environment
It is an extremely easily grown house plant. Coffee prefers medium amounts of rainfall and will not stand droughts or flooding. In Hawaii, coffee plantations often occur in drier zones. Coffee is a short-day plant, blooming most profusely when sunlight lasts for 8-10 hours a day. However, coffee may bloom year-round depending on temperature and rainfall conditions. Temperatures above 85F, and below 65F will suppress flowering. Flowers occur in large bunches on old growth wood. Flowers are generally self-fertile and will produce fruit without pollination. Rainfall around flowering time encourages development and blooming. Coffee trees can adapt to both shaded and sunny locations. In both hot or cold climates, shading and wind breaking is necessary. In more standard tropical climates, coffee may be grown in full sun.
Propagation
Superior varieties can be propagated by cuttings and grafting, but coffee varieties usually come fairly true to seed, so seed is often used for propagation as well.
Coffee fruits contain little flesh and are usually discarded, the seed however undergoes a processing procedure that yields the coffee bean of commerce. Over 95% of commercial coffee varieties arise from this species.
Native Range
Understory tree native to medium elevation (4000-6000ft) tropical forests of Ethiopia. Humans have spread coffee throughout tropical zones worldwide. It is commonly cultivated in Hawaii, the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Australia.

Arabian Coffee Tree Seeds
Arabian Coffee
(Coffea arabica)
Coffea arabica is grown to produce coffee. Not cold hardy.
Soil Type: Moist, well-drained soil in full sun.
Zones: 10 and 11
Germination Range: 60-80%
Stratification Requirement: Scarification required.
Indoor Planting: If your seeds require stratification or scarification – do the recommended pretreatment before planting indoors. Planting Instructions: Fill a container with seed starting mix to about ½ inch from the top. Place your seeds 1 inch to 1 ½ inches below the soil surface. Gently water your seeds to keep moist, not soaking wet. Heat & humidity is critical for germination. Germination may occur in 1 week or as long as 3 months (depending on the species). Place the seed container on a heat mat under growing light(s). Keep your growing lights on 14 hours per day. Keep your heat mat on 24 hours per day. Once your seeds germinate, move each seed into its own container under the growing lights and on the heat mat. Keep your seedlings indoors for 2-3 months before transplanting outdoors in the spring (May to June).
Outdoor Planting: If your seeds do not require stratification: the best time to plant tree and shrub seeds outdoors is after the last frost in your area (spring). In the Northern states – the best time to plant seeds outdoors is from May to June. If your seeds require pretreatment: you should plant your seeds outdoors before the ground freezes in your area (late September to early November). Your seeds will naturally stratify during the cold winter. Germination usually occurs in May or during the spring season.
