The etiquette seed

10 Questions with Heather Post, Founder & Director, of The Etiquette Seed
Prepared by Gwynne Keen

1) What is The Etiquette Seed?

The Etiquette Seed is a company dedicated to helping others to succeed in life and in business by
promoting civility, professionalism, and ethics through certified social and business excellence programs.

2) What was the inspiration for starting this business?

During a long career over two decades as a law enforcement officer and detective, I worked day in and day out with the “negatives” of society. I noted the steady decline of social tolerance, professionalism, and ethics, both on and off the job. With a heartfelt belief in the honor guard code and as a part-time law enforcement instructor during those years, I felt as if I made a difference to some in their professionalism. After retiring, I still wanted to “make a difference” in my community while shifting focus toward the “positives” of society. I wanted to make use of the sharpened communications skills that came with years on the job. With my daughter off at college, I began to look for avenues to continue to “teach”. After also taking into consideration my love for children and realizing what an amazing result my daughter was of my strict manners and etiquette training, I took the initiative to become certified through The Emily Post Institute (no relation, unfortunately!), and The Etiquette Seed was born.

3) How long has The Etiquette Seed been operating?

The Etiquette Seed has been in business for a little over a year now and it is growing by leaps and bounds! Last February, we had our “first annual” Social and Business Excellence Banquet at Halifax Plantation. Many program graduates, community members, business owners, and school faculty were in attendance and a great time was had by all. I am looking forward to next year’s event already!

4) Where does The Etiquette Seed call home and which region do you serve?

The Etiquette Seed is based out of Port Orange, Florida, but currently serves a client base throughout northeast and central Florida.

5) What types of classes does The Etiquette Seed offer?

We offer a variety of Business Professionalism training programs for front-line employees. These are
conducted to suit the specific needs of the business/clients and can be anything from one-hour presentations, to half-day seminars, to multiple-day workshops. Business owners know that first impressions and employee-client interaction can make or break a business. These programs are meant to give businesses the competitive edge.

Our youth programs include: – Children’s Etiquette Classes (boys & girls, ages 6 to 10) – Teen Leadership Programs (boys & girls, ages 11 to 18) -Individualized and homeschool instruction is also available.

We offer group/organization programs for groups like the Girl/Boy Scouts, private and public schools, daycares, and parent programs for PTAs/PTOs.

We are also available for speaking engagements at your Rotary Club, Women’s Organization, etc.

6) What types of events has The Etiquette Seed been involved with?

The Etiquette Seed has been proud to have been involved in many various charity and sponsorship events, helping to raise funds for local domestic abuse shelters, children’s organizations, and schools.

7) What is the Community Commitment Program?

The Etiquette Seed is committed to “giving back” to the local community. We volunteer services to different organizations that support family values, education, and creating a better societal foundation and are pursuing some board member positions to have more of an impact. Throughout the year, we offer scholarships for some lower income students to attend our programs. We provide school presentations to schools with lower income populations at little to no cost.

8) What is a challenging aspect of running a home-based business?

I began this venture with subject-knowledge, ability, and determination but minimal knowledge of the ins-and-outs of “running a business.” Since I am the sole employee and decision-maker, the most challenging aspect of running a home-based business has been learning and keeping up with all of the general, day-to-day business operations and having to make all of the decisions myself. Luckily, I have built up a good team of professionals around me that have been able to offer sound business advice when needed.

9) What do you find rewarding about running a home-based business?

The most rewarding part of being the Founder/Director of The Etiquette Seed has been to assist others (young and old) to be successful and be the very best that they can be, both socially and professionally. I am very passionate about what I do and enjoy it immensely.

Seed Exchange Etiquette

I’m brand new to seed saving and exchanging but thought it worked on the honor system. I sent someone several seeds and haven’t heard from him/her since, despite trying to contact. I understand packages are lost in transit, however a reply would have been appreciated. Truthfully do most people work on the honor system and send you what you agree to exchange? It’s unfortunate as now I have few seeds to share to open up my collection. Unsure if I should continue swapping and how not to get scammed again.
Thanks to the few of you that trusted me and traded back. I appreciated it!

HillSeeker: I suppose there are some bad apples anywhere but I have found great people on the Hot Pepper list here at Garden Web. I am sending you an email to your registered email on garden web. Please respond back to me at the email address provided in that email along with your mailing address and I will send you a pack each of: Numex Twilight, Black Cuban, Sweet Banana, Orange Tree Habanero, Hot Hungarian Wax, Naga and Pepperoncini. That should get you started.

I have traded a ton on here , I have a box bigger than a shoebox that is stuffed full of envelopes from all the trades off this forum. Out of all of those I noticed about 3 that didn’t send me anything back, there may have been a few more I didn’t even notice truth be told but overall I have had nothing but good luck and good trades from this forum.

I also had one guy write me back months later after I sent him seeds and tell me his seed collection got wet and ruined then he had to move right after that. So if thats true or not isnt important but my point is stuff does come up in peoples life that cant be helped.

Send small amounts when you trade if your supply is low , I feel sure you can get the seeds you want from this forum. I have aquired lots of peppers you could never find in my part of the country and they all came from people here.

Yeah that’s happened to me before, even though I would get responses still the seeds never came so I called it a loss and moved on. But I have received so many seeds in trade/SASBE/free offers that it balances out. There are great people here even with a few bad apples every now and then.

If you are interested in hot/super hot Bhut, Trinidad Scorpion, Fatalii, Chocolate Habanero respond to my email with your address.

We will get you back on track

I don’t know how many trades you have arranged but I do know of at least one that worked out very well in your favor.

It’s your choice whether to continue trading seeds with members here. Personally, I wouldn’t let one bad experience (whatever the cause) keep me from participating and sharing.

Hi Bruce, I tried again. Thank you for your generous offer.

Bill, Thank you every so much for your generosity as well. I have 25 nice healthy little seedlings growing and I’m very excited to see how things turn out.

Overall I was just wondering what people’s experience was on the website. I won’t let a few bad apples ruin it and it’s no biggy. I know things come up as well. I didn’t think it was a reoccurring problem but wanted to ask. I have been taught so much from this forum and it opened me up to a whole new hobby. I hope I didn’t offend anyone by this post.
