How To Buy Marijuana (Legally) In Salem
Here’s what you can expect if you want to buy marijuana at the first recreational retailer in greater Boston, which opens Saturday.

SALEM, MA — Ward 5 City Councilor Josh Turiel will get the honor of being the first person to legally purchase marijuana in Salem when Alternative Therapies Group opens its recreational retail store in Salem on Saturday. Turiel — who said on Facebook he hasn’t used marijuana in nearly 30 years — was chosen for the effort he put into educating himself and constituents about what legal marijuana sales would mean for Salem.
“I honestly didn’t expect that, but I didn’t have to think about it for very long. I gladly accepted the offer, and I think this sends a positive message that our cannabis industry is a part of the city, a part of society, and that times have changed, mostly for the better,” Turiel said.
For everyone else, city officials have laid out a series of steps you should take if you want to buy marijuana from ATG. These procedures are aimed at eliminating the long lines and problems for neighbors that hit the other two stores in Massachusetts, and will be in place at least until the novelty of the new store wears off.
Here’s Salem Patch’s step-by-step guide for buying marijuana from ATG when it opens Saturday.
Step One: Make A Reservation
ATG has set up an online reservation system, and if you were planning on making a purchase Saturday, you’re already too late. When we checked the system Wednesday morning, the earliest appointment available was for Wednesday, Dec. 19 at 10:45 a.m.
Note that these rules do not apply to medicinal marijuana customers, who will still be allowed to walk in to make purchases.
Step Two: Don’t Forget Your ID
Well, duh. State law prohibits sales to people under the age of 21 and you’ll only be allowed to use a government-issued i.d. to make purchases.
Step Three: Dress Warm
In social media posts Tuesday, Mayor Kim Driscoll said customers should still expect to wait in lines, even with the reservation system in place. As a result, she urged people to dress accordingly. While temperatures are expected to be warmer this weekend than they have been this week, there is rain in the forecast for Saturday.
Step Four: Hit The ATM
Recreational sales are cash only. ATG has an ATM machine on premises.
Step Five: Take Public Transportation
There is a small parking lot for ATG customers on Grove Street, and customers can also use the 297 Bridge Street parking lot. But city officials have been urging customers to plan on taking the MBTA commuter rail or buses since yesetrday’s announcement that the store would open this weekend. On-street parking in the neighborhood will be for residents only until further notice.
ATG will run a shuttle bus from the MBTA Commuter Rail station in Salem to the store at 50 Grove Street. Only people with confirmed reservations will be allowed to take the shuttle.
Step Six: Know What You Can Buy
Because of supply constraints, ATG is capping flower purchases to 1/4 ounce until further notice. There are also no edibles available for sale at this time, but customers can buy vaporizer and concentrates in addition to flower.
