List of canadian seed companies

A list of seed companies we have dealt with other the years in various ways. Some are small Canadian seed companies, others are larger and/or American but also have some philosophies which we can support (and they, in turn, support small seed companies) and so we like to deal with them and support their work as well.

Seeds of Diversity – Canadian Seed Catalogue Index

“Looking for seeds? This is a list of vegetable and fruit seeds that were sold in recent years by Canadian seed companies.

Click on a section in the list below to see the varieties available, and the companies that sold/sell them. Visit these companies, buy their seeds, and enjoy a beautiful, diverse garden this summer!”

A translation: “De Nieuwe Tuin [The New Garden] is a small and a bit quirky farm where we work on the selection of extraordinary edible plants. We play with taste, color and carefree culture method, an adventure in bio-diversity in search of a new public garden. We are working on a new style kitchen garden, where the fun and the experience of growing vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers is as important as the harvest. The result of our quest can be found here in the form of seeds, plants and books.”

Wild Garden Seed

“We are an organic seed and vegetable farm in the Pacific Northwest. We produce farm-original varieties of many salad greens, vegetables, herbs and a few flowers. All of our seed is Organically Grown at Gathering Together Farm along the winding Marys River on the edge of Philomath, Oregon. All of this seed is open pollinated, untreated, germ and vigor tested in living soil mix, and well cleaned. These varieties have proven themselves popular and profitable in farmer’s markets locally and in fine restaurants on both coasts. Many of these same seeds are for sale in the other catalogs that we supply, but this is the only source for the entire commercial collection of Wild Garden Seed from Gathering Together Farm, organically certified since 1987.”

West Coast Seeds

“West Coast Seeds started in 1983 in Vancouver, British Columbia, under the stewardship of Mary Ballon. A nursing instructor at the University of British Columbia, Mary’s love of gardening and fervent belief in “Growing Food” locally has helped motivate a generation of organic gardeners on the West Coast and right across Canada. As a regional family seed company, West Coast Seed only sells untreated seeds. We specialize in HEIRLOOM, HERITAGE and CERTIFIED ORGANIC seeds for your organic growing. Over 800 varieties of untreated, non GEO, open pollinated and hybrid seeds for your selection.”

Upper Canada Seeds

“Upper Canada Seeds started operations in 1999 catering specifically to home gardeners. At that time we offered a variety of vegetable, flower and herb seeds but we soon discovered it was very difficult to find reliable suppliers of organically grown seeds. We decided to specialize in tomatoes because they don’t readily cross pollinate and we could produce all our own seed on our farm in Prince Edward County. Also, the taste of tomatoes has suffered more than any other vegetable (technically it’s a fruit) in recent years due to modern breeding and selection practices. We try several new varieties every year and include the best in our annual seed listing. Our prices include shipping, handling and all applicable taxes. All of our seeds are open pollinated. We do not sell hybrid, chemically treated or genetically modified seeds.”

The Cottage Gardener

“An heirloom seedhouse and plant nursery in southern Ontario, Canada. We have been providing rare and endangered heirloom varieties of vegetables, herbs and flowers to gardeners and market growers since 1996. Our online catalogue has over 650 heirloom seed varieties available, in retail packet sizes and bulk amounts. We have one of the most diverse selections of Certified Organic seeds in Canada, and we add to this each year. Each spring we sell certified organic plants onsite.”

Terra Edibles

Terra Edibles is proud to offer over 140 varieties of heirloom tomato seeds as well as beans, other popular vegetables, herbs, flowers and aromatic sweet peas. All are organically-grown and many varieties have been grown out by certified organic growers – these are indicated with a ‘CO’ beside their name.”

Salt Spring Seeds

“This is our 27th year of promoting a safe and sustainable, local agriculture. It is very gratifying to now see so many individuals and communities across Canada embracing this concept! We hope that some of the vegetables, beans, grains and herbs in this catalogue will help you to become more self-reliant in food and medicine. All our seeds are untreated, open-pollinated and non-GMO.”

J. L. Hudson Seeds

“We are a public access seed bank – not a commercial seed company. You will find that our presentation of information and how you access our seedbank is a bit different from ordering seeds from the usual on-line commercial enterprise. Our purpose is the preservation of botanical biodiversity, the propagation and dissemination of rare, threatened and endangered plants, research into the biology of seeds, and the preservation of vanishing knowledge of the uses of plants – called “ethnobotany” or “ethnobotanical knowledge”. To this end, we propagate and distribute rare seeds from every continent; native plants from around the world, including flowers, vines, trees, cacti, culinary herbs, heirloom vegetables, ornamentals, hardy perennials, medicinal plants, and tropicals.”

Johnny’s Selected Seeds

“Johnny’s Selected Seeds is a privately held, employee-owned seed producer and merchant headquartered in Winslow, Maine, USA. The company was established in 1973 by our Founder and Chairman, Rob Johnston, Jr. Johnny’s mission is helping families, friends, and communities to feed one another by providing superior seeds, tools, information, and service.”

Heritage Harvest Seed

“Heritage Harvest Seed is a Canadian mail order business specializing in rare and endangered heirloom varieties of vegetables, flowers and herbs. Jessy Friesen and I (Tanya), along with my mother Iris Stefanec, are working together to preserve heirloom varieties and offer their seed for sale to the public. This requires a lot of research and countless hours trying to track down rare seed sources, as well as delving into the histories of different varieties.” Located in Carmen, Manitoba.

Gardens North

“Gardens North is an internationally respected Canadian seedhouse offering an eclectic collection of rare, hardy, perennial and woody seed, detailed germination instructions and an exemplary level of personal service.”
