Every stoner begins as a novice and learning how to inhale weed is the first step of every toker’s journey. Since breathing is a natural process that occurs thousands of times per day, it’s strange to contemplate “how to inhale.” Nevertheless, all first-time smokers start somewhere, and proper breathing technique is essential to maximizing the cannabis experience.

Most first-timers hit their joint like they’re smoking a cigarette without actually breathing the smoke into their lungs. If the smoke isn’t fully inhaled into the lungs, it only travels into the throat and nasal passages, which absorb THC, thus wasting precious cannabinoids. This is why many first-time tokers fail to get high.
Read on to learn how to avoid coughing and choking while making the most of every cannabis hit.

Proper inhalation techniques stem from the same basic principles and vary slightly depending on whether you’re smoking a joint, hitting a bong, or using a vaporizer.
When smoking, you’re burning cannabis to the point of combustion and inhaling the smoke to deliver cannabinoids into your bloodstream. Smoking can be painful for lungs, so it’s important to take slow, measured draws to minimize irritation. Start with shallow inhalations and draw more deeply as you progress and become more comfortable.
Here’s a handy technique to ensure your lungs absorb the maximum amount of THC: slowly inhale about two-thirds of your hit and follow up with a deep, inhaled gulp of air. The fresh air pushes the cannabis smoke down into the lungs and should improve THC’s absorption. There’s no need to hold your inhale for long. THC and other cannabinoids may act as bronchodilators, which means they increase airflow, speeding absorption.

After your first toke, consider waiting 5-10 minutes to observe the onset of effects and then deciding whether you need more.

Some cannabis consumption methods are more harsh than others. Blunts and spliffs include tobacco, which damages the lungs. Joints and pipes, which contain cannabis only, may be less harmful. Similarly, smoking marijuana out of a bong or bubbler cools the otherwise harsh cannabis smoke by filtering it through water.

Start slow as you pull through your pipe or bong, gulping a breath of fresh air after you clear the chamber. The gulp helps you absorb the THC fully. You can always take deeper hits as you become more comfortable and understand how to control your dose.
Vaporizing weed is less harsh on the lungs than smoke, but many cannabis consumers report a more intense high with this method. Cannabis vaporizes at a much lower temperature than its burning point, thus preserving the cannabinoids and terpenes otherwise lost in combustion.

When vaping cannabis, whether in oil or flower form, it’s better to take shallower hits and hold them for slightly less time than you would hold cannabis smoke. Take time between hits to assess how you feel and decide whether you’d like to consume more.

How To Inhale Marijuana
For all of you weed enthusiasts who have been smoking for years, bear with us as we welcome and walk through any marijuana newbies that have joined us on how to properly inhale the good stuff so that they can get higher. Besides, you may learn a thing or two!
For many beginners, and even some experienced vets, it takes a minute to realize that smoking marijuana is not the same experience as smoking a cigarette. Whether you’re a newbie, or looking to get as much from your hit as possible Crazy Bills is here to walk you through how to inhale weed properly.
The difference between weed and cigarettes
The overall action of smoking weed is pretty similar to that of smoking a cigarette as you draw in the smoke and blow out a cloud. A perfectly shaped ‘O’ cloud if you’re really talented. The true difference between the two is about the speed of your inhale.
Puffing away on a cigarette, you’re most likely inhaling pretty quickly and nervously flicking the end of the butt to knock the ash off. When it comes to inhaling cannabis, a whole different picture is painted. A much more chill picture.
Spoiler alert: The key to a really good hit? Take it slow.
While you inhale nice and slowly, don’t stop inhaling once the smoke is in your mouth. Many beginners sit there with the motionless smoke in their mouth before blowing it out. Others try to swallow it. Both ways are ineffective and a complete waste of precious THC. Ain’t nobody got time for that!
To experience the full effects of Mary Jane, you need to keep inhaling while the smoke is still in your mouth. Keep drawing the smoke deep into your lungs until you can’t anymore. Be sure to breath in some fresh air through your nose during the process since your mouth should be closed. Once you’ve hit your inhalation wall – hold it!
After holding the smoke in for as long as you can, slowly breathe the smoke back out. Whether you hold it for one second or ten, don’t exhale too fast. Once you learn how to control the stream of smoke you will know what we mean when we say you will experience a stronger high.
Sorry new guys but it’s inevitable that at some point you will experience a coughing fit while you inhale. The best way to not experience this? Avoid it before it happens.
To do this just start off with tiny hits rather than one big hit. This is a workout your lungs and body isn’t quite used to yet. Work up your cough resistance by steadily working up your inhalation tolerance.
If you have somehow completely avoided experiencing this, then we raise our next joint to you. A burning throat is another common issue that beginners experience when inhaling cannabis. That firey feeling in your gullet is being caused by the hot smoke from your lit marijuana, mostly from joints.
For your first couple of times, try smoking out of a bong or bubbler since those devices filter the smoke with water. That water cools down the smoke before it hits your lungs and will actually soothe the burning sensation in your throat.
If you’re coughing a lot of the burning throat is becoming unbearable, the answer is simple – stop smoking!
Crush a bit, roll it up , take a hit. The ever-so-popular joint will always be one of the most celebrated methods for smoking marijuana. Just remember, unlike cigarettes, you want to light the end of the joint before you begin puffing.
Roast the joint by holding it up to a flame, turn it like those rotisseries you see at Swiss Chalet to make sure the joint is evenly burning. Once the joint is cooked, raise it to your mouth and give it a few short puffs.
Important: there’s very little protecting your lungs from the smoke, so be sure to just take small hits to start as you build up your tolerance.
Before you pack your bowl you first need to use a grinder to break up your bud. You will notice on the side of the bowl there’s a little hole. Put your thumb over that hole and bring the mouth piece to your lips.
Using your spare hand, light up the weed and inhale the smoke simultaneously. Once you feel a good burn, release your thumb to open up for air to rush into the pipe. This will allow you to start inhaling the smoke.
The key when it comes to smoking a bowl is to not overpack it otherwise you run the risk of your weed burning unevenly.
Don’t get bowls confused for bongs. While the concept is pretty similar, the inhalation from a bong is much more intense since you draw in a lot more smoke. Similar to a bowl, a bong will have a stem that has a bowl at the end. Fill that compartment with your weed and light.
Bring the stem to your mouth and start drawing in the smoke. Like a bowl, you need to let fresh air into the process so you can get an even stronger inhale. Once you hit that point, pull the bowl out from the bong and continue inhaling.
Don’t make the same mistakes some of us vets made when we first boarded the green smoking machine. Learn how to properly inhale marijuana early on so you can appreciate the full experience, save on money, and maybe someday pass along your wisdom to another beginner.
