DIY Weed Jar Candles
What to do with all your empty weed jars? I save all my glass jars, from big ones like Bubbies Pickles which are perfect for drinking water or vases, down to medium sized ones I can use for cocktails, but all of my “too small to drink out of” jars have been collecting in my cupboard with no hope for escape.
On top of that I am a candle addict. My pyro inclinations make me want a tiny flame going on at all times. However, eco-friendly candles using high quality ingredients are super expensive and I can’t afford my habit.
SOLUTION! Weed jars are the perfect container for candles! I have good news, making candles is way easier and cheaper than you thought.
Sustainable Wax Options:
could find a local/no packaging option
animal product/not vegan
2lbs for about $25
Organic Coconut Wax
2lbs for about $15
Organic Soy Wax
2lbs for about $10
supporting soy means supporting monocropping/large corps
I used soy wax because I bought some a long time ago and I had it on hand but I’m going to try to find some beeswax at the farmer’s market next time. How many candles you can make with a pound completely depends on how big the candles are but I would say at least 5 medium sized candles per pound so even with beeswax as the most expensive option I’m still averaging $2.50 for a sustainable, high quality candle which is super awesome.
Melt your wax (beeswax & coconut wax best, organic soy wax as used here okay)
Take your wick (organic hemp used here, cheap and easy to find online) and place it on the bottom of the far, wrap the loose end around a chopstick to rest on the jar so it will stay in place when the wax dries
Pour your melted wax into jar. You can put fun stuff into the layers of wax like rocks, tea leaves or weed trim
Leave it to harden and then do whatever you want with it! Draw on it, put it in your mouth, put it next to you in a bath, give it to a friend ETC.
Great way to reuse all of the random small and medium sized jars in your life. When the candle burns all the way through, you can make another candle out of it! The shot glass idea is a cute gift because at the end of the candle they have a shot glass. Get creative and remember THERE ARE NO RULES! Make that damn candle however you want.
