A cannabis expert tries an assortment of CBD-infused oils and water-soluble tinctures at a variety of potencies and price points to see how effectively they integrate into wellness regimens, relieve short term and chronic pain, quell both incapacitating and mild anxiety, and support healthy sleep.

The large selection of CBD oils available on the market may feel, at least a bit overwhelming, especially when comparing textures, flavors, delivery systems, potencies and price points. Despite an inarguably flooded market, cannabis celebrities, established lifestyle brands and even our own community members are all potentially producing the next best CBD oil. As users, the primary concern when shopping for a therapeutic CBD oil is where to begin their search, especially when so many brands are putting out so many exemplary products, and others, well, not so much.

With all the various CBD oils, infusions and tinctures proclaiming to be the most potent and most effective products both in stores and online, it can be difficult to narrow down which products are highly effective, therapeutic quality CBD infusions and which should be ignored. With that in mind, our experts auditioned over 30 top-rated CBD oils and tinctures at a number of price points and potencies to determine which infusions were truly recommendation-worthy and why. Best Overall: NuLeaf Naturals Multi-Cannabinoid Oil

NuLeaf’s multi cannabinoid oil is for the well-rounded canna-wellness enthusiast.

Photo: NuLeaf Naturals

Nuleaf’s multi cannabinoid oil took our top spot for the best CBD oil over the course of testing for a number of reasons: first, its full spectrum formula features measured doses of CBD, CBC, CBG, and CBN, next, the carrier oil used is organic hemp seed, giving the oil an earthy, unadulterated profile and mouthfeel, and finally, the dosing was easy to control and the effects both hyper-responsive and super easy to build upon.

Pros & Cons

This oil’s complex multi-cannabinoid formula captivated us on a number of levels. It’s a mood-boosting, focus supporting, whole-body wellness supplement foremost, but beneath that is a shimmery, mood brightening perspective shifter that is buildable, consistent, and responsive enough for day or nighttime use.

The effects were resolute; mood lifting, stress soothing, focus sharpening, and body lightening – all proportional to my resting state. When used as part of my AM routine, the woody profile had an inoffensive mouthfeel, and similarly in the evening, the hemp-y flavor was mild enough to not interfere with my oral health routine. The effects are a bit too sheer for targeted pain relief, though the tincture is an effective nausea reliever.

Additionally, the overall physical relaxation the oil offers sublingually would well compliment a salve or edible as a pain/discomfort relief package. Overall, this oil offered the most comprehensive, responsive effects of any CBD oil tested, and its straightforward, unflavored formulation appealed to our more specific preferences. Your tastes, of course, may vary.

  • Full spectrum extract
  • Multi-cannabinoid formula with a balanced ratio of CBD, CBN, CBG, CBC

Best Full Spectrum CBD Oils

These CBD oils feature THC as well as minor cannabinoids including CBN, CBG, and CBC.

Medterra Full Spectrum CBD + THC Oil

Medterra’s full spectrum blend offers an all-purpose CBD oil with super responsive effects.

Medterra’s full spectrum CBD + THC oil features a potent 50mg dose of CBD bolstered by a 2mg of THC, which may be a swoon worthy for users with sensitive systems. The formula is rich with minor cannabinoids, however, so the effects are far more therapeutic and fortifying than recreational. This tincture’s particular design makes it a potent sleep support, wellness routine addition and anxiety quencher. Medterra’s CBD + THC oil uses an organic coconut MCT carrier.

Pros & Cons

Medterra’s full spectrum formula was a great addition to my seasoned stoner’s daily wellness kit, though it does sit on the costlier end of the oil spectrum. The oil is super fast absorbing, and when taken first high in the morning, I could feel effects like increased focus, gentle mood lightening and very mild physical relaxation within half an hour. Those brightening effects may have been antithetical to my PM wellness routine, but they were a nice panacea for intermittent bouts of anxiety.

For cannabis users with less of a THC tolerance however, this tincture might hit in a way more relaxing, even insomnia reliving way. Users reviews laud the tincture for its effective sleep support, mostly attributing the efficacy to Medterra’s THC balance, so consider your own tolerances and preferences before committing to a bottle (and note: Medterra also makes a broad spectrum, THC-free oil).

  • Full spectrum extract
  • Fast absorption
  • Light citrus flavor
  • Potent
  • 2mg of THC per 50mg CBD dose
  • Organically grown hemp
  • Responsive Certified
  • May feel too intense for some users

  • Not Good For: Anyone who feels 2mg THC gummy is too intense for comfort

cbdMD Full Spectrum CBD Oil

cbdMD’s Full Spectrum CBD oil is an affordable tincture with a straightforward formula that absorbs quickly as a sublingual, but is also a highly effective topical. The dose is a robust 25mg CBD per dropper, and the unflavored variety has a nutty, toasty, unadulterated profile that established cannabis consumers will likely appreciate. cbdMD’s carrier is an MCT oil.

Pros & Cons

cbdMD’s 750mg bottle of CBD oil is very straightforward. The flavor, the fragrance and the soft way it absorbed into my palette all indicated – and delivered – an unexpected CBD experience. In the morning, a dose was a nice assist to a strong cup of tea and coffee, in the evening, a dose was supportive of restful sleep. It assuage some hormonal cramping and physical aches, but when I fumbled the bottle and splashed a bit on my tendonitis plagued thumb, I learned it also acted as a pretty effective topical.

Though topical relief is not this oil’s recommended use, I thought the universal efficacy spoke to the purity of the product, even if it was discovered on account of my fumbling fingers. Bonus, I rubbed a bit of the leftover splashed oil on my face and my cheeks felt like cashmere for the rest of the day.

Cookies CBD Oil Tincture

For trendy, contemporary CBD users.

The wellness arm of Cookies, the cannabis brand founded by rapper Berner, features this hemp CBD oil tincture flavored with a terpene blend inspired by the cultivar, Gelatti. The full spectrum tincture delivers approximately 30mgs of CBD per dropper, and in addition to a curated tableau of terps, the profile also has a candy-sweet, semi-skunk aftertaste. This semi-refined hemp distillate tincture uses coconut derived MCT carrier oil.

Pros & Cons

This was one of the most robustly flavored tinctures we auditioned. In fact, it’s almost aggressively skunky. A flavor profile such as this seems geared directly at established stoner types who are transitioning into CBD for wellness – particularly since the formula uses a CBD distillate, which is refined extraction. In this regard, I appreciated the brand, though the end result is a bit more faux dive than authentic roadside, if you catch my drift.

  • Full spectrum distillate
  • Fast absorption
  • Sweet, authentic terpene flavors

  • Authentically stank cannabis flavor may not appeal to all users

Koi Full Spectrum CBD Tincture

Koi’s full spectrum CBD oil is great for sweet-toothed users in need of a medium potency relief.

We auditioned the Koi Complete Full Spectrum Key Lime Tincture 1000mg CBD variety, a potent formulation with a sweet-tart lime flavor and quick absorbing coconut MCT oil carrier. This responsive oil infusion is suitable for both day and evening use, and though the overly-large box seems a bit excessive for a 1oz bottle, the branding is clear and messaging easy to digest.

Pros & Cons

As part of my morning wellness routine, I thought the key lime flavor was a bit cloying, but for users who crave sweeter morning delights, this tincture will likely suit their needs. Efficacy wise, I found this tincture to support a focused morning whether I started the day working at my desk or engaging in a bit of AM fitness – in that regard, it was also excellent in aiding recovery.

As far as nighttime use, both my partner and I found this tincture to support restful sleep, and saw potential for an effective sleep aid. Users’ reviews support that assertion, with a large swath of users reporting relief from insomnia, stress, and the type of superficial pain that prevents fulfilling rest.

Papa & Barkley Full Spectrum CBD Drops

For cannabis purists who celebrate earthy profiles.

Photo: Papa & Barkley

Papa & Barley’s CBD Releaf Drops are highly celebrated for their full spectrum efficacy, which, even at a reduced potency, seemed to address a number of issues. This particular variety of Releaf Drops features a 30mg dose, which may not seem particularly reduced cannabinoid count to the uninitiated, but even with their lower cannabinoid count, these Releaf Drops have an inarguably universal appeal.

Pros & Cons

Papa & Barkley’s Releaf Drops were a panacea for our whole family during a particularly stressful holiday. While visiting us from out of state, one parent was rushed to the ER for an emergency surgery. The other parent was wracked with anxiety, fear, stress and insomnia. By stealth medicating their meals (with their consent – of course) we were able to sidestep the worst of the emotional exhaustion we were all feeling having an immediate family member in isolation (our local hospital could not allow visitors due to Covid protocols).

As part of my daily wellness routine, Releaf Drops supplied relaxation, focus, an even mood and a clear mind. When used as an emotional panacea, effects were felt within a half hour and included reduced stress, anxiety and depression as well as super deep, ultra-restful sleep.

  • Full-spectrum and whole plant extract

Green Roads Full Spectrum CBD Oil

For folks who need a syrupy, full bodied texture in their CBD oil.

Photo: Green Roads

Green Roads Original CBD Oil is a full spectrum tincture with a delivery system that’s unnecessarily complicated (the 1 oz bottle arrives in an oversized box accompanied by a separate syringe and cap adaptor for dosing) but super efficient at maintaining a kind-of stasis wherein anxiety, stress, depression and superficial pain are all assuaged. The texture leaves a bit to be desired, with the formulation resulting in a thicker, syrupy oil with a more domineering mouthfeel. Green Roads uses a combination of glycerine, MCT oil, sunflower lecithin and seed oil as well as hemp seed oil as carriers.

Pros & Cons

Green Roads CBD Oil was inarguably the most challenging of the oils tested for this roundup of the best CBD oils. While the oils’s efficacy is plain (while testing, the product proved to be super supportive of healthy sleep, as well as reducing anxiety and leveling moods) the delivery left so much to be desired. For example, rather than the industry standard eyedropper bottle, Green Roads packs their bottles alongside a separate plastic syringe and dosing lid. It felt unnecessary, not only did it not simplify dosing, it was far too reminiscent of a pharmaceutical injection. Anyone triggered by that action is not likely to find comfort in this manner of dosing, even if it is sublingually.

That said, those who prefer something richer and more toothsome may appreciate the full bodied richness of this oil. While other tinctures are ultra-light, super-sheer and quick to absorb, this thick treacle is quite the opposite. It’s heavy, cloying, and the aftertaste lingers at the back of the palette long after the dose has been absorbed. For me, this was a less than ideal delivery of an all-too-tangible potion, but if typical, simple MCT infused oils feel too light for your tastes, Green Roads’ viscous canna-sap has you covered.

  • Full spectrum
  • Super potent
  • Responsive
  • Not organic
  • Overwrought packaging/dosing system
  • Thick, syrupy mouthfeel
  • Slow to absorb
  • Acetic aftertaste
  • Expensive

Best THC-Free CBD Oils

These Broad-Spectrum and Isolate CBD oils have 0% THC; some may include non- psychotropic cannabinoids such as CBN, CBG, and CBC.

Medterra Ultra Broad Spectrum CBD Oil

A universal tonic for users adverse to THC.

Medterra’s Ultra Broad Spectrum CBD oil is a THC-free version of their equally effective full spectrum oil, formulated for non-THC users to deliver long term wellness results and short term relief of anxiety, sleeplessness, stress and minor pain. We auditioned the citrus variety and found the 33mg dose to be a well calculated measure, able to support our daily health efforts as well as our emotional buffering needs with its 10:1 ratio of CBD to minor cannabinoids. Medterra’s Ultra Broad Spectrum Oil uses coconut MCT oil as a carrier.

Pros & Cons

Medterra’s Ultra Broad Spectrum oil is light, quick absorbing, and just citrusy enough to brighten up its aftertaste. Efficacy-wise, both my partner and I found that despite the exclusion of, ahem, certain cannabinoids, the entourage effect was still very much palpable.

We both decided the oil was better suited for morning use; though nighttime use supported restful sleep, the effects seemed brighter and more compelling when we were still in the process of waking up. In this way the tincture felt like a fortification against some of the inevitable hassles of the day. Those primary eye-opening effects were not felt as strongly in the evening. That said, the oil was responsive enough to our resting states to support sleep.

The lack of THC also makes this a somewhat shareable product, especially with friends and family members who may not have the best rapport with THC, but are still interested in the therapeutic efficacy of CBD. For those users, this tincture would be an excellent, low-stakes/high potency introduction.

Social CBD Isolate Drops

For contemporary users interested in modern botanical CBD blends.

Photo: Social CBD

Social’s isolated CBD drops (500mg strength) feature approximately 16mg of CBD bolstered by turmeric, ginger root and lemon oil in each dose, which could be attractive to low toleranced users who prefer to stick with CBD and botanical blends to avoid any less familiar cannabinoids. Social CBD drops’ effects include stress relief, mood lifting, and physical recovery, all with a very mild delivery. Varsity users take note, this tincture is better suited for true cannabis teetotalers and may not deliver the most robust of results for those with well-worked-over endocannabinoid systems.

Pros & Cons

Both my partner and I were excited to integrate this oil into our wellness routines, but as we’re both daily THC users, we found the effects to be a bit too ephemeral for our needs, resulting in larger doses that either of us were comfortable with, especially at this price point. That said, we both still enjoyed effects like stress relief and physical recovery, we just also figured this product was far better suited to a user with little-no earnest experience with cannabis. In fact, Social CBD Drops would be a radically suitable introduction to CBD for the otherwise uninitiated.

The punchy lemon-ginger profile, the easy dosing, the silky mouthfeel and the mellow efficacy, of Social’s CBD Drops make them an introductory product for those interested in exploring CBD therapy, but nervous about the vast amount of minor cannabinoids in a full spectrum product.

cbdMD Broad Spectrum CBD Oil

cbdMD’s THC-free oil is effective for both sleep and mood support.

cbdMD’s Broad Spectrum CBD Oil delivers effects incredibly similar to the effects experienced from the full spectrum oil, though with a milder delivery better suited to a wider swath of users. Our 300mg bottle offered 10mg doses, which felt suitable for elderly family members with little or no cannabis experience as well as less savvy cannabis users still navigating canna-therapeutics. This oil is available in a number of potencies and flavors. cbdMD uses coconut MCT oil as a carrier.

Pros & Cons

cbdMD’s Broad Spectrum CBD Oil features a straightforward formulation that appealed to both my partner and mine’s predilection for super-simple tinctures with complex, natural flavors. The expected effects arrived with zero fanfare, and included daily stress abutment and anxiety relief as well as a gentle mood lift and a modicum of recovery support.

My partner in particular appreciated this oil for its sleep support after a long night shift. While I preferred an AM dose, they found the formula responsive enough to be suitable for night time usage. I too experienced sleep support benefits, but still preferred the effects I felt in the morning. To that end, this tincture is balanced enough for use day, night, afternoon, or anytime a slight attitude adjustment feels appropriate.

Martha Stewart CBD Oil Drops

A neatly suburban intro to mild cannabinoid therapy.

Photo: Martha Stewart CBD

Martha Stewart’s foray into cannabis is expectedly twee, but also expectedly universal and family friendly. Formulated with isolate rather than full spectrum, whole plant extract, this oil tincture delivers muted effects including heightened focus, a clean energy boost, mild relief from stress and anxiety and sheer mood boost. Each 750mg bottle features a simple formulation dressed in a truly Martha-worthy flavoring, such as Blood Orange or Meyer Lemon. Martha Stewart’s CBD Oil uses an MCT oil carrier.

Pros & Cons

Despite a well established relationship with CBD, I still wasn’t sure what to expect from Martha Stewart’s CBD Oil. As an isolate, I figured the therapeutic usages would be limited, at best, it would be a mild addition to a wellness routine, at worst, an insignificant blip in a herculean brand’s pathway to lifestyle domination.

The testing was revelatory however, not only did Martha deliver a CBD tincture with a distinctly culinary nod, this oil had a palpable kick. After my partner’s first dose, they energetically dove into a dayful of household projects. Similarly, after my first dose, I found a work-groove and was able to vibe into a flow state pretty easily. We both preferred this as an addition to a morning wellness routine, as it was our experience that these effects leaned peppy rather than restful. Your results, of course, may vary.

Best Affordable CBD Oils

If you’re looking for a quality CBD oil but don’t want to spend too much, these oils will not disappoint. The average price for CBD oil is $50 per 1000mg ($0.05/mg), and anything below this is considered budget-friendly.

JustCBD Full Spectrum CBD Oil

A basic, straightforward CBD tincture for basic straightforward wellness needs.

JustCBD’s full spectrum, unflavored CBD oil is a potent, high quality, affordable alternative to more exclusive, boutique wellness products that, despite its lower price point, delivers noticeable mood brightening, clarifying and, physically soothing effects. JustCBD’s unflavored formulation is versatile, straightforward, and easy to dose despite its higher mg percentage. This tincture is delivered via coconut MCT carrier oil.

Pros & Cons

JustCBD’s full spectrum CBD oil might not have been, at first blush, particularly memorable on the tongue, but this essential formulation highlights grassy hemp rather than an orchestrated essential oil flavor profile, which, for a generous section of CBD oil aficionados, is preferable.

We integrated JustCBD into our daily wellness routine and quickly found that, though it undoubtedly provides mood lifting, focus enhancing effects, the physical relaxation this tincture provides is a bit better suited to bedtime use. That’s not to say this product is a sleep aid, but rather that its particular variation of physically calming effects are uniquely sleep supporting. User reviews supported our insight; overwhelmingly, user reviews site JustCBD Full Spectrum CBD Oil as an absolute panacea for insomnia.

Cibadol Full Spectrum CBD Tincture

For super effective medicating on a budget.

Cibadol produces a distinctly potent, high quality full spectrum CBD oil with an inclusive price point that can be further lessened through subscription. This affordably efficient hemp oil is easily dosed, activates quickly, and the soothing, invigorating effects last for a while. For folks with sensitive palates, this tincture is unflavored, but retains the terp-rich profile of a live resin, and the straightforwardly pleasant aftertaste is refreshingly grassy. This tincture utilizes coconut MCT carrier oil.

Pros & Cons

Considering the potency of this oil, its price point is uniquely remarkable. With 1,800 mg of CBD per 30ml bottle, users would be justified in giving this bottle a double take given a price tag that’s less than half of its direct competitors. But affordability aside, this CBD oil tested high across the board; the responsive effects were suitable for evening restoration, recovery and sleep support as well as an AM mood boost. And bonus, it cleared a superficial toothache away in minutes.

The distinct flavor profile of this CBD oil suggests the source plants were cultivated with a robust mouthfeel in mind, and likewise the entourage effects feel untarnished by manufactured intentions. My partner enjoyed this oil as a PM recovery tonic post-workout. As part of a morning routine it provided a mood boost, clear focus, and an elastic physical lift that made daybreak workouts marginally easier to jump into.

Strongest CBD Oils

The strongest CBD oils have a true full-spectrum profile with a high concentartion of cannabis derived terpenes. You can find these with potencies up to 12,000mg CBD.

Aspen Green CBD Oil

Aspen Green’s full spectrum hemp extract is perfect for folks in need of a potent dosage.

Photo: Aspen Green

Easily one of the tastiest CBD oils we enjoyed over the course of testing, Aspen Green’s 3,000 mg CBD oil was most favored for both its potency and its distinct smack of bitter grapefruit zest. This oil activates quickly, its effects are long lasting, and the layered entourage effects ensure both physical relaxation and an underlying, super-sheer euphoria that is suitable for both daytime and nighttime use. This oil utilizes an organic coconut MCT carrier oil.

Pros & Cons

Aspen Green’s Full Spectrum CBD oil may not contain actual grapefruit zest, but the inclusion of essential orange and rosemary oils somehow contribute to a terp profile that is captivating to a bitter citrus lover like myself. Both my partner and I enjoyed this CBD oil as part of a daily wellness routine but found it a bit too easy to spill our sublingual doses; the dropper/applicator has a uniquely bent tip, which may have been conceived in order to make dosing easier, but we found, after too many misfires to blame user error, it’s more of a bug than a feature (thankfully, Aspen Green will be phasing out the bent-tip droppers soon).

On a positive note, when a THC smoke sesh resulted in a high that was quickly spinning into unmanageable couch-lock territory, a dropperful of Aspen Green presented a liferaft that cushioned the high without detracting from the positive effects of the THC. When taken solo, we appreciated the potent attitude adjustments and physical relaxation it brought to our day, but bonus – it can also possibly rescue you if you get too high.

Five CBD + THC Tincture

For users who prefer a sweeter, super-potent tincture.

Folks into a sweeter mouthful will likely appreciate the delicate, confectionery mouthfeel of Five CBD’s full spectrum, CBD + THC formulation. Each 30 ml bottle features a whopping 3,000mg of CBD and around 60mg of THC, which results in approximate doses with a 100:2 ratio of CBD to THC. Doses are rounded out with a full slate of supporting minor cannabinoids, offering even more health benefits and deeply felt effects. This oil utilizes organic coconut MCT carrier oil.

Pros & Cons

Five’s CBD + THC oil tincture was one of the first brands to pass through our testing routine. The first impressions were positive; the flavor was citrus sweet, the oil fast-absorbing under the tongue, and the onset offered a gentle, almost imperceptible attitude adjustment. When taken in the morning, the super mild psychotropic effects were only noticeable in contrast to my jittery coffee state, and I wondered, would someone familiar with such effects even realize them as anything more than mild elation. On a less caffeinated stomach, the effects were less jubilant, but still super comforting.

When taken in the evening, I thought this tincture brightened my eyes a bit, making me feel more awake than before I had taken my dose. It occurs to me that results will vary, but this particular tincture just worked better for me in the morning. It increased my focus, soothed my deskbound body, and kept my mood sunnier than it may have been otherwise.

Lazarus Naturals Full Spectrum CBD Tincture

For users who appreciate earthy, complex flavors.

Photo: Lazarus Naturals

Having been acquainted with Lazarus Naturals while testing CBD salves, I auditioned their Classic, high potency oil tincture with high expectations. The Portland brand has a reputation for ultra-high quality products with amazing efficacy, and -spoiler- this CBD oil is right in line with the rest of their product slate. This oil utilizes both hemp seed and coconut MCT carrier oils and has an earthy, woody aftertaste and slower absorption.

Pros & Cons

The potency of Lazarus Naturals CBD oil is experienced not only through its efficacy, but also through its robust aftertaste, which is bitter and grassy enough to provoke a slight cringe from the uninitiated. Part of Lazarus’s appeal, in my opinion, is how authentic their products feel. These are, by all means, commercially manufactured, branded products, but they feel as if they were made by a neighborhood garden witch. And to a certain brand of consumer, that authenticity makes Lazarus Naturals particularly appealing.

I integrated this CBD oil into my AM wellness routine, and it delivered expected mood lifting and physically calming effects, but it also tempered an unmanageable mid-morning dab when I felt like I might have overconsumed. When taken in the evening, it remains responsive, providing either a smooth boost of clarity or a cushy complacency depending on the state of the user.

Neurogan CBD Oil

For high potency bedtime wellness routines.

Another high potency, full spectrum CBD oil for users who prefer milder mouthfeels is Neurogan’s full spectrum citrus flavored variety. This formulation features 12,000mg of sungrown hemp CBD per 2 oz bottle and though it delivers effects suitable for both day and evening use, we found it to be slightly more supportive of a healthy bedtime routine. Neurgoan uses coconut MCT oil as a carrier.

Pros & Cons

While Neurogan tested well as an addition to an AM wellness routine, we found it to be of particular value before bed. When taken in the waking hours, the physical and emotional effects were too sheer to shake up our routine in a noticeably positive way, but when taken in the evening, it felt like a perfect foil to a good night’s rest.

A 100mg single dose (0.5ml) supported an as-restful-as-possible 6 hours of sleep, which is as many hours as my 6 year old allows me to usually sleep. Rather than knocking me out for an extended rest, Neurogan’s formulation just supported the rest I could realistically fit into my schedule. The citrus-y flavor profile might not agree with minty toothpaste, so pro-tip, medicate about 15 minutes before your PM oral health routine.

Best Organic CBD Oils

These are the best certified organic CBD oils with the cleanest ingredients and extraction process.

Joy Organics CBD Oil

Joy Organics’ USDA Organic CBD oil is a super responsive, multi-purpose medicine cabinet addition.

Photo: Joy Organics

Over the course of testing, we were able to audition two varieties of Joy Organics 75mg-per-dose CBD oil: full spectrum unflavored and broad spectrum, THC-free Tranquil Mint. These ultra-potent CBD oils delivered remarkably similar results; the full spectrum, unflavored variety offers a sheer, yet robust, slate of mood lightening and physically soothing effects, the broad spectrum variety offers a milder version of the same. This CBD oil uses an MCT carrier.

Pros & Cons

Both iterations of this oil were straightforward and effective, shining for their clean flavors, and potent, long lasting effects. The full spectrum dose is a bit more multifaceted, with effects that emphasize improved cognition and lightened mood in a package responsive enough for day or evening use. While I preferred the unflavored full spectrum as part of my morning wellness routine, my super-active partner preferred to have a dose before bed to aid in physical recovery. We were both pleased with our results, mine being mental clarity, theirs being subconscious restoration. The full spectrum variety of Joy Organics CBD oil uses coconut MCT oil as a carrier.

The mint flavored, broad spectrum variety of Joy Organics CBD oil offers very similar effects of mental agility and physical recovery, though these are a bit more two-dimensional in their delivery. This oil is completely free of THC, but the effects are still smooth and potent, so it’s relatively more suitable for sensitive systems. Users take note, Joy Organic’s broad spectrum CBD oil uses olive oil as a carrier, rather than fast absorbing MCT oil, so anticipate a slick mouthfeel.

Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil

Charlotte’s Web USDA-certified CBD oil is perfect for users who prioritize curated flavors as well as high potency.

Photo: Charlotte’s Web

We tested both Mint Chocolate and Lemon Twist variations of Charlotte’s Web Full Spectrum 60mg CBD oil, and while we couldn’t decide on which we preferred, the efficacy of each flavor is inarguable. With each formulation Charlotte’s Web has produced a fast acting, potent, easily dosed CBD oil with a sheer aftertaste of either ripe summer citrus or soothing mint mocha. Both variations tested were formulated with coconut MCT oil as their carrier.

Pros & Cons

Though Charlotte’s Web produces three flavors of their 60mg-per-dose CBD oil (Lemon Twist and Mint Chocolate, featured here, as well as Orange Blossom) we found the effects of the two we auditioned to be nearly identical. The only difference in effects we noticed were implanted by our own unique frames of reference. For me, Lemon Twist was a bright, sunny addition to my morning wellness routine, whereas Mint Chocolate soothed me in a way that felt appropriate for bedtime. When I swapped their timeframes, however, they worked as well as the other, making my own preferences the main differentiator.

Likewise, my partner thought starting the day with a Mint Chocolate exhale was pure luxury, and initially preferred the Mint Chocolate oil in the AM hours. They similarly thought the brisk lemon offered a cleaner mouthfeel, and was thus more suitable for bedtime. Results really do vary, but the bottom line was that the effects were responsive to our resting states, potent, and weirdly delicious (if you’re into hemp-y flavor foundations).

R+R Medicinals CBD Tincture

For green witches taking a break from making their own medicated oils.

Photo: R+R Medicinals

R+R Medicinals has a limited product line, but I think hard-nosed CBD hunters might find that more a virtue than a hindrance. R+R’s CBD oil for example, is available in two varieties – mint and unflavored, and though their packaging feels overwrought and overthought, the simple efficacy of the product is inarguable. We auditioned the unflavored variety and found that, earthy and woody as it is, it also delivered the complex aftertaste of lovingly cultivated cannabis, which definitely foreshadowed the effects to come. R+R Medicinals unflavored CBD oil uses coconut MCT oil as its carrier.

Pros & Cons

R+R Medicainal’s CBD Oil was functionally challenging, first-impression-wise. The box was oversized to accommodate a negligible slip of paper marketing material, and as such felt a bit wasteful. Similarly, the wild-west-apothecary aesthetic felt targeted to a trendy, boutique demographic rather than the wider, therapeutic field of users.

The effects of this oil however, feel at odds with its packaging. The effects arrive with a sparkling onset that’s great for pre-workout fortification. The long lasting mood boost and physical ease can easily be exploited into something vaguely resembling a high (cashmere cognition, sheer euphoria) when paired with a healthy workout’s natural blast of aerobic serotonin. While this oil tested excellently as an addition to an AM routine, it was more of a standout for how interestingly the effects blossomed post-workout, but of course, your results may vary.

Bloom Farms Recover CBD Tincture

For cannabis purists looking for a daily supplement to aid in physical recovery.

Photo: Bloom Farms

Bloom Farms CBD Recover tincture was another masterfully produced but totally over-packaged CBD tincture oil whose first impression was more performative than necessary. Bloom Farms has a stellar reputation for straightforward, super-effective hemp and cannabis products, but their branding is almost aggressively chic, which can feel exclusionary to users with less cosmopolitan tastes. This Bloom Farms tincture uses coconut MCT oil as a carrier.

Pros & Cons

Bloom Farms’ Recover CBD tincture is formulated with the brand’s highest concentration of cannabinoids, (1200mg per 1 oz bottle) making for a well-rounded, multi-purpose sublingual that while indeed awesome for recovery, is also a great mood leveler, anxiety extinguisher and mild physical soother.

As part of a morning routine, this tincture was eye opening, soothing and mildly relaxing. The same effects occurred when taken in the evening, however they arrived in appropriate measure, easing me smoothly to sleep after a long night of work that may have kept my mind spinning all night otherwise. My partner appreciated this tincture for post workout recovery, and found when taken before bed, they woke up limber and pain free.

Cornbread Hemp Distilled CBD Oil

For folks who want full spectrum effects without skunky full spectrum flavor.

Photo: Cornbread Hemp

Kentucky based Cornbread Hemp’s Distilled CBD oil is a light, ultra-smooth, unflavored oil that’s best for daytime use. This oil utilizes flower exclusively, and the distillation process ensures the tincture is free from the earthy aftertaste delivered by the plant’s chlorophyll-packed leaves and stalks. Cornbread Hemp uses coconut MCT oil as its carrier.

Pros & Cons

In a crowded field, Cornbread Hemp stands out for its distilled CBD oil, which delivered expected effects (mood balance, physical soothing, anxiety relief) in what seemed like the only truly unflavored package. Though the effects were markedly more sheer than products that utilize whole plants, the effects felt like they would be well-suited to users with considerable sensitivities, particularly to flavor.

As a part of my morning wellness routine, this oil was acceptably supportive of my focus, mood and energy, but in the evening the effects were clouded by my resting state, which was too powerful to be swayed by this distillation. A more sensitive user will undoubtedly experience different effects, evidenced by the user reviews on Cornbread Hemp’s website, which are overwhelmingly thankful for such a low-stakes version of an already low-stakes product.

Best Water Soluble CBD Tinctures

The active compounds in cannabis are naturally hydrophobic oils, so in order to become water soluble, they require more post-production processing than a more straightforward CBD oil tincture.

CBD American Shaman Water Soluble CBD Oil

For users who require a seamless integration into liquid.

Photo: CBD American Shaman

CBD American Shaman’s water soluble hemp CBD tincture simplifies ingestion for those with aversions to oils or otherwise sensitive palettes. Because of its formulation, it integrates seamlessly in liquid, although its slight lemon aftertaste does somewhat limit its culinary applications. Its super-low dose makes a great gateway CBD product, especially considering it’s just as easily delivered in a glass of water as under the tongue.

Pros & Cons

The appeal of CBD American Shaman’s water soluble CBD tincture is how gracefully it blends into liquid, and while my personal preference is for a sublingual oil, this tincture played a very important role for a visiting family member during some very particular traveling drama. On an out-of-state visit over a holiday, a family member contracted pancreatitis and had to be hospitalized for an emergency surgery.

While they were in the hospital, their partner was experiencing severe anxiety. They were a thousand miles from home, dealing with an emergency healthcare situation without their established healthcare team. With CBD American Shaman’s water soluble tincture, I was able to dose this family member’s water bottle each morning, ensuring a daylong anxiety soother they didn’t have to integrate into their other daily medications, granted they remembered to hydrate. The bitter back end of the aftertaste is easily tempered with lemon, and a single dose ingested over the course of a few hours ensured long lasting anxiety relief.

Elixinol Everyday Rapid Reset CBD Liposome

For users averse to oil altogether.

Elxinol’s broad spectrum, water-soluble CBD liposome operates with a pump rather than a dropper, making dosing super simpler. Measuring milligram markers on a miniature cannula can be a drag for users with compromised eyesight or fine motor skills, but Elixinol’s ergonomic pump action is far more accessible. And at 5mg a dose, it’s a great, low-stakes introduction to CBD for curious users.

Pros & Cons

Over the course of an emotionally chaotic holiday week, a non-cannabis-using family member who suffered from acute anxiety and panic attacks was able to medicate themselves effectively with small daily doses of Elixinol’s water soluble CBD liposome. This tincture was preferable for its sweeter front end and milder (but still heckin’ bitter) aftertaste. The citrusy essence limits the liquids it can seamlessly integrate with but sweet juices, flavored waters, smoothies and mixed mocktail moments are perfect opportunities for this product to shine.

Efficacy-wise, this tincture proffered long lasting relief from anxiety when taken at the onset of an anxiety attack or anxiety inducing situation, and though the aftertaste leaves something to be desired, the effects are undeniably potent and lasting. As part of a wellness routine, we found the effects beneficial for both morning and evening dosing

  • Water-soluble

Best CBD Oils for Sleep

These CBD oils are formulated specifically for sleep and deep relaxation.

CBDfx CBD Oil Sleep Tincture

For sleep support and occasional attitude adjustments.

CBDfx’s sleep tincture features a harmonious balance of CBD and CBN that’s most suitable for evening use. The formulation is fast absorbing, easily dosed and its natural hemp flavor is mellow and palatable. The cannabinoid blend is straightforwardly relaxing, and since this product is CBDfx’s designated sleep tincture, its 5mg per dose CBN and melatonin inclusion is certainly supportive of restful sleep. CBDfx uses MCT coconut oil as its carrier oil.

Pros & Cons

CBDfx’s CBD Sleep tincture is an oil infusion that for sure relaxes, though the relaxation is potent enough to put a body to sleep when ingested with sleepy intentions. In this regard, this is an excellent addition to a nighttime wellness routine, though we didn’t find it best for day use.

During testing, instead of keeping CBDfx’s Sleep Tincture alongside my daily supplement stash box, I kept it on the boudoir shelf beside my other nighttime essentials. When employed sublingually as part of my PM routine, this tincture supported an easy transition to bed and restful sleep. In addition to PM wellness, my partner also grabbed this tincture a few times to quell bouts of gum/tooth/mouth pain and felt relief inside of 5 minutes.

I also found it effective at relieving mild bouts of anxiety. The CBN/CBD balance straddles the line between sleep-aid and anxiety extinguisher, and can be effective for both, especially for those who prefer nighttime-wellness routines.

  • Potent dose, effective for inducing deep sleep
  • Full spectrum extract
  • Fast absorption
  • Sweet citrus flavor
  • Easy dosing
  • Balanced cannabinoids for relaxation
  • Non-organic
Effects Felt During Testing
  • Effects Felt: Mood balance, relaxation, sleepiness, restful sleep, mouth pain relief

Dosist Sleep CBD Oil

A sleep tincture with potent bedroom vibes.

Dosist’s THC-free Sleep Tincture features 2.5mg of CBN per dropper balanced by 12.5mg of CBD. The broad spectrum formula features a proprietary nanoblend tech that absorbs sublingually with ultra-fast efficiency and is also easily blended into food. As a nighttime wellness supplement, this tincture supports an easy transition to bed and a restful night’s sleep. Dosist uses coconut MCT oil as a carrier.

Pros & Cons

Because of its THC-free formulation, Dosist’s sleep CBD tincture felt a bit more family friendly than other tinctures. During a stressful holiday, I was able to integrate Dosist’s Sleep tincture into a few different desserts as a restful, calming, sleep supporting, herbal bonus that was appropriate for all the guests.

Dosist Sleep tincture has a cashmere onset that, while not intoxicating, is certainly sleep inspiring. Where other CBN balanced tinctures masquerade as daytime anxiety crushers, it was my experience that Dosist will sidestep any mood leveling to just push you right into bed, which is precisely what I want in a sleep aid.

When tried during the day as an attitude adjuster, rather than a sour mood pivoting to a sunnier state of mind, I took a nap. When experimenting with dosage, I found that a quarter dose put me to sleep for an hour or two, a half dose helped older family members with sleep dysfunctions achieve 8 restful hours, and a full dose was super effective in eliminating any sleep-hindering thoughts, quieting my mind enough to get truly awesome rest.

TheraOne Sleep CBD Tincture

Botanical supports and limited cannabinoids make this tincture a stand out.

TheraOne’s Sleep CBD tincture relies on a blend of sleep supporting botanicals to relax its users. This full spectrum cocktail of essences features valerian root, chamomile, lemon balm, lemongrass, and chamomile – all working together to support restful sleep.

Pros & Cons

While auditioning TheraOne’s Sleep tincture, my experience was very straightforward. I integrated it with my PM wellness routine, and found it to be generally supportive of restful sleep. That said, I couldn’t get over the flavor profile, it simply wasn’t the most toothsome blend for my particular licorice-hating palette. My partner however, preferred this tincture to other sleep blends with more syrupy flavor additions like mint or sweet citrus. They found this sleep tincture to be tremendously supportive of an easy transition from night-shift to bed, especially on nights when he was especially overworked.

The herbal blend also gives this tincture a slight mood lifting edge that, when taken sparingly, can act as a relaxation agent rather than a sleep-aid exclusively. Pro-tip, avoid a full dose in the morning, unless you want to start the day by going back to sleep.

How We Tested the Best CBD Oils and Tinctures

After weeks of extensive first-hand testing, we picked the best CBD oils for a variety of purposes. Photo: Brianna Wheeler/CBD Oracle

Replacing a medicine cabinet’s worth of OTC medications with cannabis therapies is a goal of many pharmaceutically exhausted cannabis users. This vetted roundup of the best hemp oils might help jump start that effort.

Over two months, we auditioned over 3 dozen of the highest rated CBD oil tinctures in a wide range of potencies, spectrums and flavors. Our criteria for inclusion included credibility, lab testing by ISO/GMP certified facilities, customer reviews, quality of lab reports, concentration and balance of cannabinoids, in-house manufacturing (as opposed to private label) and price.

Once a product cleared those hurdles, we tested them as part of a morning wellness routine, a bedtime wellness routine, as well as for relief of anxiety, stress, superficial pain (cramps, post-workout recovery, minor oral pain), and chronic insomnia. Each product was tested for no less than 3 consecutive days by two experts, as well as family and friends whose medication needs outweighed their familiarity with therapeutic CBD.

Photo: CBD Oracle

Across the board, the best CBD oils delivered in most if not all of the categories we collected data in. What proved to define our preferences was texture, potency, and flavor. Regardless of potency, unflavored oils are rarely unflavored. Flavored oils, meanwhile, run the gamut from candy-sweet to straight-up skunky. Textures can vary from sheer and ephemeral to viscous and gooey. Potencies vary from 5mg doses to 50mg doses, as the ideal dose varies from person to person.

The data gathered for this best CBD oil list is meant to characterize each oil for not just its optimal use, but also its optimal user. Learn more about how we independently test CBD products.

Guide to Buying the Best CBD Oils

CBD extractions have been used as therapeutic compounds for almost all of history, establishing themselves as a cornerstone of natural plant medicine well before antibiotics and NSAIDs were just a pharmacy away.

Hemp CBD can be used to soothe topical traumas well as conditions like eczema and psoriasis, but more so, CBD is now regarded as a comprehensive holistic wellness supplement able to support immune health, cognitive function, stress reduction and an extensive assemblage of other therapeutic usages, including but not limited to chronic pain and insomnia relief.

Today’s hemp oils include complex botanical blends, curated terpene tableaus, manipulated cannabinoid profiles, culinary inspired flavors, and even state of the art extraction tech that makes them water soluble.

Many oils on the market today may appear similar in formulation and delivery, but cultivar selections, carrier oils, added terps and cleverly organized cannabinoids ensure that no two oils are exactly alike, and though they may treat the same issues, the effects can arrive in ways that some may find more attractive than others.

What is CBD Oil?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of 113 identified cannabinoids in cannabis plants. CBD oil is created by extracting CBD from the hemp cannabis plant and diluting it with a carrier oil, often a coconut derived, medium chain triglyceride that cleanly absorbs sublingually. Learn more about CBD.

What Are the Different Types of CBD Oil?

There are three different variations of CBD available to users:

  • Full Spectrum utilizes all available phytocannabinoids (including THC), flavonoids, phenols, sterols.
  • Broad Spectrum utilizes phytocannabinoids, flavonoids, phenols, sterols, and esters excluding THC.
  • Isolate is a highly manufactured version of CBD which eliminates all but the cannabidiol in the hemp plant.

Users should consider workplace drug testing/regulations, individual sensitivities, and personal preferences at least when deciding between full spectrum, broad spectrum, and isolates.

What is Water-Soluble CBD Oil?

Water soluble CBD oils are produced with nanotech that alters the solubility of both the CBD extract and the carrier oil, enabling them to mix seamlessly with fluids. Traditional oils do not integrate with water.

What Does CBD Oil Help With?

Most recently CBD oil has been studied for its efficacy in potentially easing the symptoms of many familiar health conditions, not limited to stress, anxiety and neurological disorders. Furthermore, data suggests CBD benefits heart health, acts as an immune system modulator, and can relieve certain types of chronic pain and insomnia.

How Much CBD Oil Should You Take?

Does CBD Oil Get You High?

CBD oils don’t necessarily get their users “high” per se, but it should be noted that each person’s endocannabinoid system is unique. Full spectrum products may contain the same amount of THC as half a recreational gummy, which will certainly affect some users differently than others, though referring to the effect as a high is definitely hyperbole.

Broad spectrum and isolate products, however, will not engage any psychotropic effects, though their efficacy may be diminished without a more comprehensive entourage. Feels range from mild, sheer mood boosts to a complete extinguishing of stress, anxiety and even pain.

Will CBD Show Up in a Drug Test?

There is no taxonomic difference between cannabis and hemp; they are, scientifically speaking, the same plant. So, yes, full-spectrum CBD oils with even small amounts of THC could very well show up on a drug test for cannabis after a while. Users concerned about drug testing should do their own due diligence to ensure using any of these listed therapeutic-only products does not imperil their work position. Broad-spectrum oil and CBD isolates can be a safe option as they don’t contain any THC.

How Much Does CBD Oil Cost on Average?

CBD oils range from $0.02 per mg to $0.05 per mg on the affordable end (around $30 per 1oz bottle), though for a high quality, whole plant, full spectrum oil, the average cost is around $0.06 per mg (up to $150 per 1oz bottle).

How to Read a Product’s Lab Report?

A CBD product’s COA (certificate of analysis) will inform users of the product’s total cannabinoid percentage, the ratio of cannabinoids used, the amount of THC present, the percentage of terpenes and which are dominant, as well as testing results for pesticides, residual solvents, and heavy metals. Learn more about third-party lab reports.

Final Thoughts

The best CBD oil tinctures can be invaluable tools in a daily wellness routine. A full spectrum of cannabinoids can support a healthy immune response, normalize sleep patterns, boost circulatory and cardiac health and in some cases, even protect against/medicare chronic conditions like diabetes, insomnia or even cancer. Even broad spectrum and isolate variations of the cannabinoid cannabidiol can have profound long term effects on a user’s health.

The best hemp CBD oils do more than round out a daily supplement routine; CBD oils can support physical recovery, short term pain relief, and extinguish bouts of unmanageable stress and/or anxiety. Across the board, the effects we encountered when auditioning the many CBD oils on our curated roster were in line with what we as users had come to expect from any high quality CBD oil, be it formulated from isolate, full or broad spectrum extract.

Daily use led to leveled moods and increased focus, and in many cases, improved sleep. Occasional use for issues such as anxiety soothing or pain relieving nearly always delivered at least adequate results. In the end, each CBD oil reviewed on this list could be considered the best CBD oil, what separates these products are totally subjective, highly specific personal preferences for flavor, texture, price and potency.

When exploring what may or may not constitute the best CBD oil for their needs, we encourage users to consider not only their budget, but also what appeals to each of their senses, because there really is a formulation out there for each and every potential patient – if their willing to do a bit of searching.

All of these oils are excellent in terms of cost, potency, and value — but our favorite is the pain-relief formula. It’s formulated with high-potency CBD, along with Corydalis, Angelica sinensis, Angelica archangelica, ginger, and zanthoxylum. All of these herbs are used to manage different types of pain and inflammation.

The 3000 mg CBD oil from this brand is the strongest CBD oil we’ve tried to date.

This company is based out of Europe, but has a distribution center in the US as well.

Highlights:

  • Specialty herb formulas for different symptoms
  • Made from high-grade European hemp
  • Excellent value for the money
  • CBG and CBD oils both available

4. Endoca

€28.00 – €179.85
Endoca
Endoca CBD Oils 10 mL

4.67 / 5

Total CBD: 300 – 3000 mg
Potency : 30 – 300 mg/mL
Cost per mg CBD: €0.05 – €0.09
Extract Type: Full-spectrum
THC Content: 0.0%

Endoca is a large European CBD company servicing customers all around the world. Their products tick all the boxes we expect to see from a high-quality manufacturer — including third-party testing, full-spectrum hemp, and robust lineup of different potencies and base options.

What makes Endoca unique is that they’re selling both the “raw” CBD oils and “regular” CBD oils.

In the “raw” form (now called CBD+), the hemp extract used to make the oil has been carefully processed to avoid heating it. When hemp extract is heated, the natural form of CBD (CBDa) goes through a chemical process that removes a molecular group to produce CBD.

Highlights:

  • Offers both CBD and CBDa oils
  • Large & diverse product range
  • Well-established company with a solid track-record

5. Neurogan

$29.95 – $269.95
Neurogan
Neurogan CBD Oil 30 – 60 mL

4.83 / 5

Total CBD: 500 – 12,000 mg
Potency: 8.33 – 200 mg/mL
Cost per mg: $0.02 – $0.05
Extract Type: Full-Spectrum & Broad-Spectrum

What makes Neurogan unique is that they grow all their own hemp. This is something a lot of companies try to imply through web copy, but when you start digging you’ll find most companies white label their hemp from somewhere else.

By maintaining control over the growing, harvesting, and processing stages of production, Neurogan has complete control over the whole process. This keeps everything consistent and allows the quality control team to ensure every step of the process is done with integrity.

Highlights:

  • Wide range of CBD oil types to choose from
  • All CBD products are made from hemp grown on Neurogan farms
  • Small, family-owned business
  • 30-day money-back guarantee

Honorable Mentions (15 Premium CBD Companies)

Our honorable mentions are brands that meet the qualifications for a premium CBD company, but lack in one or more areas that prevent us from listing them in the top 5.

All of the companies on this list are great brands overall and the CBD oils they make are definitely worth the money spent.

Joy Organics is one of the few truly transparent companies in the CBD space. They’re active on social media, and provide clear evidence to third-party testing for every batch of product.

The CBD tinctures sold by this company are available in a wide range of potencies (450–1250 mg per bottle) and flavors (lime, mint, orange, lemon, tropical fruit, and unflavored).

3.67 / 5

Total CBD: 450 – 900 mg
Potency : 20 – 30 mg/mL
Cost per mg CBD: $0.20

CBD American Shaman has one of the largest product lineups we’ve ever seen. This brand sells several different versions of their CBD oils (each with multiple flavors and potency options), as well as topicals, gummies, and capsules. CBD American Shaman even sells some of the more obscure product categories —‚ such as CBD gum, CBD bath bombs, pre-rolled hemp joints, and more.

Our favorite CBD oil in the CBD American Shaman lineup is the water-soluble CBD oil.

Water-soluble CBD is thought to have better absorption and therefore offers improved potency at l ower doses than non-water-soluble products.

Highlights:

  • Extensive product lineup
  • CBD oils available in multiple different flavor options (changes often)
  • Third-party test results available upon request

8. Medterra

$39.99 – $199.99
Medterra
Medterra Isolate CBD Oil 30 mL

4 / 5

Total CBD: 500 – 6000 mg
Potency: 16.6 – 100 mg/mL
Cost per mg CBD: $0.03 – $0.08
Extract Type: CBD Isolate
THC Content: 0.0%

Medterra is one of the larger and more clinical companies in the CBD space. This company uses a proprietary broad-spectrum hemp extract for all its products, which allows the company to guarantee its products are THC-free and provides consistent results across different batches.

One of the earliest claims to fame for this company was a deal it made with Walgreens and several other big-box stores in the US to begin selling topical CBD products (CBD oils soon to follow). They were also one of the first public sponsors for sporting events and athletes in the US — a trend that’s now become commonplace in the CBD industry.

Highlights:

  • Uses broad-spectrum, THC-free hemp extracts
  • Available in multiple different potencies
  • Sponsors several athletes and sporting events in the US

9. RYA Organics

RYA Organics
RYA Organics Nexus Relief 60 mL

4 / 5

Total CBD: 600 mg
Potency: 10 mg/mL
Cost per mg: $0.15
Extract Type: CBD Isolate

RYA Organics specializes in CBD-infused skincare products. Their products are priced for the high-end market but deliver with the impressive formulations contained inside. The company sells two CBD oils — the Nexus Relief (for pain) and the Rumi Dream Tonic (for sleep).

Both of these oils are only available in one potency (10 mg/mL) of CBD or CBD/CBG respectively. This is definitely on the low-end for a CBD oil, but it’s made up for with the dozen or so other ingredients in the formula. These oils are more of a herbal pain and herbal sleep tincture with CBD in them than a dedicated CBD oil like the other products on this list.

Highlights:

  • High-end CBD skincare products
  • CBD content in RYA Organics oils is miniscule
  • CBD pain and sleep tinctures are formulated with over a dozen other ingredients

10. Populum

$59–$279
Populum
Populum Full-Spectrum Hemp CBD Oil 30 mL

4.5 / 5

Total CBD: 250–2000 mg
Potency: 8.33–66.7 mg/mL
Cost per mg: $0.14–$0.24
Extract Type: Full-Spectrum

Populum products are designed to be simple. They don’t offer a complex array of similar products — just a simple 500 mg or 1000 mg full-spectrum CBD oil. They also carry lavender-infused face oil, CBD honey, capsules, and a muscle rub. The simplicity of this lineup is welcomed in a notoriously complex market of (nearly) identical products.

Highlights:

  • 30-day free trial (refund policy)
  • Simple, distilled product lineup
  • Focus on organic CBD products

11. Charlotte’s Web

$29.99 – $274.99
Charlotte’s Web
Charlotte’s Web CBD Oils 30 – 100 mL

4.5 / 5

Total CBD: 210 – 6000 mg
Potency : 7 – 60 mg/mL
Cost per mg CBD: $0.05 – $0.14
Extract Type : Full-spectrum
THC Content: Not Listed

Charlotte’s Web was a pioneer in the CBD industry. They created a new type of cannabis with a much higher than average CBD content than what was available previously. Since this time, the brand’s popularity has been dwindling. These oils are still top-notch and have a team of industry experts behind them — however, the lineup is overcomplicated, making it difficult to decide on what products to buy.

The larger the bottle and higher the potency, the better the value for these oils. We recommend going for the 60 mg/mL CBD oil or higher in order to get the best value.

Highlights:

  • Industry innovators
  • Wide range of CBD oils to choose from
  • Everything is third-party tested
  • Product lineup can feel overcomplicated

12. Hemp Bombs

$25.00 – $255.00
Hemp Bombs
Hemp Bombs CBD Oil 30 mL

4.17 / 5

Total CBD: 300 – 5000 mg
Potency: 10 – 166.6 mg/mL
Cost per mg CBD: $0.05 – $0.08
Extract Type: Isolate
THC Content: 0%

There are few CBD companies as well-known as Hemp Bombs. This company is based out of the United States but operates internationally.

The main selling features for this brand are the low cost, widespread availability, and consistency from one batch to another. Hemp Bombs makes its oils out of CBD isolate, which eliminates the chances of alterations in the cannabinoid ratios from affecting the oil.

Highlights:

  • Large, international CBD company
  • Owened by the same parent company as Nature’s Script
  • Specializes in CBD isolate oils

13. Smile CBD

Smile CBD
Smile CBD Oil

4 / 5

Potency: 16.6 — 33 mg/mL
Cost per mg CBD: $0.08 — $0.06
Extract Type: Isolate
THC Content: 0%

Smile CBD has a small concise lineup of CBD products. The company carries two CBD oils — one optimized for daytime use (Energize) and another for nighttime use (Unwind). Both contain high-grade CBD isolate and a variety of other synergistic ingredients.

Both of these oils are excellent and form a perfect duo for people who use CBD in the morning before work as well as in the evening before bed. You get all the benefits of CBD while minimizing the negatives through the inclusion of other synergistic ingredients in the formula.

Highlights:

  • Two CBD oil formulas (for daytime and nightime use)
  • Small company with concise product lineup
  • All oils made from CBD isolate

14. Penguin CBD

$45–$300

Potency: 8.3 – 166.7 mg/mL
Cost per mg CBD: $0.06 – $0.18
Extract Type: Broad-Spectrum
THC Content: 0 mg

Penguin CBD has done a great job at optimizing the user experience. The company website is easy to navigate, its product lineup is concise, but covers enough diversity to cover just about any specific preferences, and the prices are all competitive with the industry average for each category.

While this brand leaves a lot to be desired if you’re looking for specialized formulas for specific symptoms, Penguin CBD is a great option for people who just want a simple, high-quality CBD oil.

Highlights:

  • Concise lineup with surprising amount of customizeablility
  • Competitive prices (especially on sale items)
  • Unique flavor options (cookies & cream, mint, citrus, & strawberry)

15. Social CBD

Social CBD
Social CBD Drops 30 mL

4.5 / 5

Total CBD: 1000 mg
Potency : 33.33 mg/mL
Cost per mg CBD: $0.07
Extract Type: Isolate
THC Content:

Social CBD was recently rebranded from Select CBD. The company has come a long way over the past couple of years since its inception. Every few months the company either releases a new category of CBD products or upgrades one of its older product lines.

The CBD drops from Social CBD have been upgraded several times already. The hemp extract contained inside is made from a high-grade CBD distillate (99%) at 33 mg/mL potency.

What makes these oils special is the addition of other essential oils to control the flavor, and effect profile of the blend. You can choose between lemon ginger, lavender, peppermint, or unflavored versions.

Highlights:

  • Avilable in both full-spectrum & CBD isolate options
  • Standard pricing higher than average, but remains competitive if you use the discount code below

Kat’s Naturals
Kat’s Naturals Relax THC-Free Sublingual CBD Oil 5 mL – 30 mL

4.67 / 5

Total CBD: 50 mg – 300 mg
Potency : 10 mg/mL
Cost per mg CBD: $0.20 – $0.40
Extract Type: Isolate
THC Content: 0.0%

Kat’s Naturals is known for its clever use of other herbs in its CBD formulations. We particularly love this tincture made with hops (Humulus lupulus) for supporting rest and relaxation.

The hops plant is very similar to cannabis and is the only other member of the Cannabaceae family of plants.

In a similar way to hemp, hops provide potent relaxing and sedative qualities through compounds in the resin.

The synergistic effects of hops and cannabis give this oil much stronger effects than CBD on its own.

Highlights:

  • Owned and operated by certified herbalist
  • Several specialty formulas available for pain, sleep, and stress
  • All CBD oiils are independantly tested

17. Five CBD

Five CBD
Five CBD Full-Spectrum CBD Oil

5 / 5

Total CBD: 1500 – 6000 mg
Potency: 50 – 200 mg/ml
Cost per mg CBD: $0.03 – $0.08
Extract type: Full-spectrum
THC Content:

Five CBD is brand new — just launched in 2020 — but the company is already competing with many of the more established brands in the industry. They have a loyal following of users who love the brand’s simplicity, elegant branding, exceptional customer service, transparency, and sheer CBD potency.

This is one of the few companies offering a 6000 mg CBD oil (200 mg/mL). This amount of CBD is well above average — it’s hard to find CBD oils with just 3000 mg so Five CBD sits well above the competition in this regard.

Highlights:

  • CBD oils with up to 6000 mg of CBD per bottle
  • Simple, yet efficient CBD oil lineup
  • New company — founded in 2020
  • All products are made from premium full-spectrum hemp extract

18. CBDistillery

$29.00 – $220.00
CBDistillery
CBDistillery CBD Isolate Tinctures 30 mL

4.17 / 5

Total CBD: 250 – 5000 mg
Potency: 8.3 mg – 166.66 mg
Cost per mg of CBD: $0.104- $0.11
Extract Type : Isolate
THC Content : 0.0%

CBDistillery is one of the oldest companies in the industry. As such, they have a large following and a wide range of CBD product categories available.

Their CBD oil lineup itself is notably diverse — you can order full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and isolate oils — each with a variety of different flavors and potencies.

This is a grat company overall, but a little bit lacklustre compared to the other brands on this list. They’re also a big higher priced if you don’t order these oils while they’re on sale (which fortunately happens often throughout the years).

Highlights:

  • Exceptionally wide product range
  • Oils come in all three extract types (isolate, full-spectrum, & broad-spectrum)
  • CBD oils a bit expensive (wait for a sale)

19. Verma Farms

Verma Farms CBD Review
Verma Farms Original CBD Oil

5 / 5

Total CBD: 500 mg – 1000 mg
Potency: 16.67 – 33.3 mg/mL
Cost per mg CBD: $0.10 – $0.11
Extract Type: Broad-spectrum CBD

This company is proudly Hawaiian. Varma Farms values sustainability and natural product formulas. They source organic hemp, avoid using any synthetic ingredients or flavorings, and employ several methods of sustainable manufacturing processes while making these CBD oils.

Verma Farms carries a few different CBD oils — a simple 500 mg or 1000 mg option, as well as specialty formulas for improving focus, sleep, or energy levels.

Unfortunately, the ingredients this company has chosen for these formulas are a little bit disappointing — for example, the sleep formula contains ginseng, which is not a good herb for evening use (can interfere with sleep). The focus formula is just fish oil and magnesium — both of which are well below the optimal dose.

We recommend sticking to the simple 500 or 100 mg CBD oils offered by this brand — great flavor and great value.

Highlights:

  • No synthetic flavorings or additives used to make these oils
  • Offers basic 500 and 1000. mgoils, as well as specialty formulas
  • Specialty formulas are a little bit underpowered

They carry several different CBD oils, including pet oils, liposomal oils, sleep oils, and more. All of their products deliver excellent value for the money, and the specialty products (like the sleep oil) are intelligently formulated to offer benefits that are above and beyond what CBD can offer on its own.

A sub-brand of Nord Oil — Nordic Cosmetics — offers an extensive lineup of topical skincare products that are exclusively available to European residents only.

Highlights:

  • Country specific websites for Germany, Norway, UK, USA, Sweden, Russia, Poland, France, Denmark, Spain, Finland, Netherlands, Portugal, & Italy

CBD oil isn’t the only way to take CBD. There are dozens of other interesting ways to use this supplement — each with its own sets of pros and cons.

Aside from CBD oil, the other most popular method of using CBD is in the form of a CBD edible. This may include CBD gummies, CBD capsules, CBD honey-sticks, CBD chocolate, or CBD chewing gum.

Inhalation is another common method of using CBD. You can order CBD vape oils, CBD vape pens, and raw hemp flower to use in a dry herb vape or roll into a cigarette.

CBD concentrates are a good option for people looking for a high dose of CBD. You can find them as CBD shatters, CBD crystals, and CBD live resin extracts.

What Are The Benefits of CBD Oil?

CBD acts through something called the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

The ECS consists of a series of receptors found throughout the body that helps maintain homeostasis and balance.

It’s through this system that CBD is able to provide so many unique benefits.

The Main Benefits of CBD Oil Include:

  1. Alleviates pain
  2. Supports healthy sleep
  3. Relieves inflammation & pain from arthritis
  4. Promotes muscle recovery after a workout
  5. Protects the brain from damage
  6. Reduces stress & anxiety
  7. Regulates mood & depression

How to Select CBD Potency

The potency of the CBD oil you buy is one of the most important metrics to consider. It’s ultimately what defines the dose of CBD you should be using.

Some people only need a low dose of CBD, so a low-potency oil makes more sense. Those who need higher doses will do better with a high potency oil. This is why most CBD oils have the option for a few different potencies.

The first step to deciding what potency to use is to figure out the ballpark for what dose you should be using. You can use our CBD oil dosage calculator to find your approximate dose according to your weight.

Here are some general recommendations for what potency CBD oil to use based on your target dose:

  • 5 mg dose — 250 mg CBD oil or lower
  • 10 mg dose — 250 mg CBD oil or lower
  • 15 mg dose — 250 – 500 mg CBD oil
  • 20 mg dose — 250 – 500 mg CBD oil
  • 25 mg dose — 500 – 1000 mg CBD oil
  • 30 mg dose — 500 – 1000 mg CBD oil
  • 35 mg dose — 500 – 1000 mg CBD oil
  • 40 mg dose — 500 – 1000 mg CBD oil
  • 45 mg dose — 500 – 1000 mg CBD oil
  • 50 mg dose — 1000 mg CBD oil or higher
  • 55 mg dose — 1000 mg CBD oil or higher
  • 60+ mg dose — 1000 mg CBD oil or higher
Terms & Definitions To Be Aware of When Choosing Potency:
  1. Strength — Refers to the level of desired intensity from a CBD dosage. The higher the desired strength, the higher the dose will be
  2. Potency Refers to the amount of CBD contained in each milliliter of oil
  3. Dose The amount of CBD in mg consumed at a time. This can be anywhere from 20 mg to 100 mg or more
  4. Servings — The number of doses taken in a day — this is usually 2 or 3 times per day
  5. Dropperful — Refers the amount of oil that fills the glass tube after squeezing the rubber dropper top. One dropperful contains 1 mL and roughly 30 drops

What Are The Side Effects Of CBD Oil?

CBD has been proven to be both safe and effective — even in very high doses.

A large meta-analysis published in 2011 explored the side effects of CBD oils in 132 clinical trials [12]. The study concluded that CBD oil was well-tolerated and safe with both high-doses and long-term use.

With that said, there’s always a risk of side effects whenever using any health supplement.

  • Low blood pressure
  • Dry mouth
  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea
  • Poor appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Skin rash

How To Buy CBD Oil: 7 Things To Consider Before You Buy

Not all CBD oils are created equal. There are a lot of brands selling low-grade, contaminated, or scammy CBD products.

It can be hard to tell the difference between a high-grade oil from low-grade or scammy products — so here are 7 factors to consider while shopping for CBD products to avoid disappointment.

1. Where Does The Hemp Come From? Is It Organic?

Organic hemp plants have the strongest terpene and cannabinoid profiles overall. You can’t make a high-grade CBD extract without starting with quality plant material.

Plants grown in organic soil without any growth boosters or harsh pesticides almost always have better cannabinoid and terpene ratios compared to non-organic products.

While we prefer to look for products that are “certified organic” — these are few and far between. Certifications are very time-consuming and can cost huge amounts of money. This is why so many organic products cost up to 25% more than non-organic products.

Hemp doesn’t necessarily need to be certified organic to offer this level of quality, but it’s the only way to be 100 percent sure the company is making products that are truly organic.

Many high-quality CBD brands are using organically grown hemp and haven’t yet earned the certification to prove it — such as Gold Bee, Endoca, and Charlotte’s Web.

2. Are The Products Third-Party Tested?

All the best CBD products are verified by third-party labs.

Third-party testing is the only way to confirm the claims the company is making about its products. Companies will (voluntarily) send a sample of every batch to an independent lab where it’s tested for cannabinoid profile, terpene ratios, and to check for any potential contaminants.

Always look for evidence of third-party testing.

Many CBD brands are making cheap CBD oils with low-quality or contaminated hemp and passing it off as premium CBD oils. These companies will rarely list the third-party results because they either didn’t pass, or they didn’t order them to begin with.

If these tests aren’t available for a particular company — move along and look for a company that offers them as a standard.

3. What Other Ingredients Are Included In The Oil

Making a CBD oil only requires two ingredients — a CBD or hemp extract, and a carrier oil.

The carrier oil is used to suspend the CBD, adding bulk and making the CBD easier to use. It also offers some benefits on the absorption of the compound through the gut lining.

There are a few common carrier oil choices CBD brands are using for their products:

A) Medium-Chain Triglyceride (MCT) Oil

The most common CBD carrier oil option is MCT oil — which stands for medium-chain triglycerides.

The medium length allows the oil to remain a liquid above freezing temperatures and has a high solubility — which means more CBD can be dissolved into the oil before it becomes saturated.

B) Hemp Seed Oil

This is considered the premium carrier oil option. It also comes from the hemp plant and many believe it offers additional synergy to the formula.

Hemp seed oil is high in essential fatty acids like GLA and comes with a host of nutritional benefits as well.

The downside is that it has a lower solubility than MCT oil due to the other phytochemicals already held in solution — so you’re not going to find ultra-high potency CBD oils made with hemp seed oil.

C) Olive Oil

This is another low-cost oil sometimes used for making CBD oils. It has a characteristic mild spicy flavor and is believed to offer improved absorption compared to MCT oil due to some circulatory stimulating effects of other compounds found in the oil. Olive oil has a low solubility so you won’t find any high-potency CBD oils with this carrier oil.

D) Sweet Almond Oil

This is another popular oil for making CBD oils. It’s more expensive than the others listed above but has a pleasant, nutty flavor. It’s a very light oil, which makes it easier to take raw under the tongue, and has a notably high solubility, allowing manufacturers to make high-potency oils with this carrier oil base.

E) Avocado Oil

High in monounsaturated fatty acids, this oil has a host of health benefits of its own, and a unique avocado flavor. This oil is light and makes for a great addition to some of the more exotic CBD oils.

F) Argan Oil

This is one of the most expensive oils gram for gram on the market. You’ll only find this oil in very high-end CBD oils. It offers little benefit when taken orally, but works wonders on the skin and hair.

4. Full-Spectrum vs. CBD Isolate vs. Broad-Spectrum CBD Oils

One of the main considerations you’ll need to make regarding CBD oils is whether you want full-spectrum hemp oil, broad-spectrum extracts, or CBD isolates.

So what’s the difference?

A) Full-Spectrum CBD Oils

Full-spectrum oils are made to preserve all of the natural cannabinoids, terpenes, and other phytochemicals found in the plant.

All these ingredients work together to provide a greater level of benefits overall through a concept called the entourage effect. Full-spectrum products are considered to be the strongest and most versatile form of CBD oil available.

Advantages of Full-Spectrum CBD Oils

  1. They leverage additional health benefits of other cannabinoids including CBC, CBG, CBN, THC, or THCV
  2. They require less processing and contain fewer additives
  3. A lower dose is needed to produce the same level of effects from an isolate

Disadvantages of Full-Spectrum CBD Oils

  1. They’re more expensive than isolates
  2. There’s the potential for trace amounts of THC in the oil to register on a drug test
  3. Each product can vary significantly depending on the other cannabinoids and terpenes in the extract

In most cases, full-spectrum oils are a better option. They’re stronger and produce a wider range of effects over isolated compounds. Most health practitioners with experience in herbal medicine prefer full-spectrum oils over isolates.

Best Full-Spectrum CBD Oils:

  1. Royal CBD Oil
  2. Gold Bee CBD Oil
  3. Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil
B) CBD Isolate Oils

CBD isolates are made by isolating the CBD content from cannabis plants before dissolving it in a carrier oil.

This is the most common form of CBD currently available because it’s easier to make CBD products that contain precise concentrations of the cannabinoid when using a concentrated product. Full-spectrum oils need to be balanced out to counteract the natural variability of CBD concentrations in one sample from another.

As a result, CBD isolates tend to be cheaper as well.

Advantages of CBD Isolates:

  1. CBD content is easier to measure and control
  2. Products made from isolates tend to be cheaper
  3. There’s more research on CBD isolates
  4. It’s easy to keep THC levels well below psychoactive levels

Disadvantages of CBD Isolates:

  1. A higher dose is needed to produce the same benefits as full-spectrum oils
  2. It’s harder to trace the CBD back to its source
  3. It lacks the benefits of other cannabinoids unless they’re added back into the product
  4. Extra processing can damage terpene and cannabinoid integrity

CBD isolates are useful for people looking for a simple, cost-effective CBD oil.

C) Broad-Spectrum CBD Oils

A broad-spectrum extract is made to contain all the phytochemicals in the hemp plant, the same as a full-spectrum product — but without the THC.

This allows a company to advertise that its products contain 0 percent THC without compromising on the benefits of an otherwise full-spectrum product.

The catch here is that in order to make these products, the extract needs to go through a lot of processing first. This usually leads to a loss of other cannabinoids and terpenes from the final product — reducing its overall effect.

The truth is that broad-spectrum products are usually a bit lackluster. They contain CBD, along with a few other common cannabinoids like CBG or CBC, but the terpene levels and other cannabinoids are undetectable in third-party testing.

Some companies are doing what we consider a “controlled-spectrum” extract — which involves mixing together various CBD, CBC, CBG, CBN, and terpene extracts together.

Advantages of Broad-Spectrum CBD Oils:

  1. Guaranteed to contain no THC
  2. Cannabinoids levels are consistent from one batch to another
  3. They tend to be cheaper than full-spectrum oils

Disadvantages of Broad-Spectrum CBD Oils:

  1. These oils often have a poor terpene profile due to extra processing
  2. May not offer all the benefits of a true full-spectrum oil

5. What Are Hemp-Derived Cannabinoids?

There are over 100 different cannabinoids in the cannabis plant (some sources claim as many as 118). Each of these cannabinoids adds its own set of health benefits to the oil.

Here’s a brief overview of the other cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant:

A) CBD (Cannabidiol)

CBD (cannabidiol) is the primary active ingredient in hemp oils. It’s non-psychoactive and provides a long list of health benefits.

This is the main component responsible for the benefits of CBD oil for pain, inflammation, anxiety, sleep, and more.

B) CBC (Cannabichromene)

CBC (cannabichromene) is the third most abundant cannabinoid in the plant. Like CBD, it’s non-psychoactive and won’t make you high no matter how much you take. It has the strongest activity on the vanilloid receptors and has shown impressive antidepressant benefits [2].

C) CBG (Cannabigerol)

CBG (cannabigerol) serves as a precursor for other cannabinoids including THC. CBD oils that are high in CBG are less likely to cause anxiety, especially if THC is also included in the oil.

CBG exerts most of its effects on the serotonin receptors in the brain (5-HT1A) [3].

D) CBN (Cannabinol)

CBN (cannabinol) is made from THC as it breaks down.

Older plants contain much higher CBN concentrations than plants harvested early.

CBN is mostly non-psychoactive — however, it can have mild psychoactive effects in its pure form. CBN is best for treating conditions including insomnia or anxiety thanks to its sedative properties.

E) THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive component in the marijuana plant (it’s what makes users feel high).

This cannabinoid works by mimicking one of our primary endocannabinoids (anandamide) to stimulate both types of cannabinoid receptors in the body.

This gives it a wide range of beneficial medicinal effects, but can also cause negative side effects including paranoia and anxiety.

There are several different types of THC — all offer psychoactive effects, but each one has a slightly different experience to offer. Delta 8 THC is the most mellow and relaxing version, delta 10 THC is the most stimulating, and delta 9 THC is right in the middle.

Full-spectrum CBD oils may contain THC in small concentrations.

6. What Are Terpenes? What Are The Benefits?

Terpenes are small, aromatic compounds abundant throughout the plant kingdom. Whenever you smell a flower, citrus fruit, or spice — what you’re truly smelling are the terpenes and other volatile components of the plant.

The cannabis plant manufactures many different types of terpenes — several of which are also found in other plants.

The most common terpenes are myrcene, humulene, bisabolol, pinene, and limonene — but there are hundreds of others.

Terpenes offer subtle medicinal benefits to a CBD oil, which can help direct the effects of CBD for a specific symptom or application.

For example, CBD extracts that have a high concentration of the terpene lavandin (also found in lavender plants) tend to be much more relaxing and sedative than CBD oils with limonene (also found in citrus fruits).

A big part of why some CBD oils are better for certain conditions than others comes down to their terpene profile.

Most reputable CBD manufacturers list the terpene content of their oils and offer tips on the effects the oil is likely to produce based on its terpene profile.
