How to Propagate Blue Daze

Commonly called blue daze, Evolvulus glomeratus “Blue Daze” is a cultivar of evergreen subshrub grown for its showy, sky blue flowers and glossy, ovate leaves. It grows best within U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 8 to 11, where it will reach a maximum height of 12 inches with a 2- to 3-foot spread. Blue daze propagates reliably from both seeds and softwood cuttings, which will produce a transplantable shrub within two to four months. However, the seeds must be started indoors before the last frost, whereas the cuttings grow best when started outdoors in summer.

How to Propagate Blue Daze from Seeds

Start blue daze seeds indoors eight to 10 weeks before the last spring frost so they are well established by planting time.

Fill individual 2-inch starter pots with a mixture of half clean sand and half potting soil. Leave the top 1/2 inch of the starter pots empty to allow room for the seeds to sprout.

Sow one blue daze seed in each starter pot. Place it on the sand mixture and press it firmly into the surface. Cover it with a 1/4-inch-thick layer of potting soil.

Pour water into each starter pot until it trickles from the base. Water again only when the sand mixture feels dry just below the surface. Moisten the top 1/2 inch of the sand mixture at each watering.

Place the starter pots on a nursery tray to make handling them easier. Move the tray to a sunny area of your home where temperatures stay around 65 F, such as near a window.

Drape plastic wrap over the starter pots to maintain a very humid environment around the seeds. Lift the plastic for 20 minutes each day to let moisture escape, which will help prevent rot.

Watch for germination in three to four weeks. Remove the plastic wrap after the blue daze seeds germinate to improve air flow around the seedlings.

Water the blue daze seedlings to a 1/2-inch depth whenever the top 1/2 inch of soil feels mostly dry. Avoid overwatering since the young seedlings are highly susceptible to rot.

Transplant the blue daze into a sunny bed with sandy, fast-draining soil after the last spring frost. Wait until soil temperatures warm to at least 60 F. Space the plants approximately 2 feet apart.

How to Propagate Blue Daze from Cuttings

Propagate blue daze from cuttings in late spring or summer when the plant is actively growing. Water it to a 3-inch depth the night before gathering the cuttings.

Fill a 2-inch starter pot with a mixture of equal parts clean sand, perlite and soaked peat. Firm the mixture and poke a 2-inch-deep hole in the center.

Gather a 4-inch-long cutting from the tip of a healthy and vigorous blue daze stem. Choose one without flowers and with plenty of foliage along the sides and tip.

Sever the cutting just beneath a set of mature leaves using a utility knife or scissors. Pull off all of the leaves from the bottom half and half of the leaves from the tip.

Coat the leafless portion at the base with 0.1-percent IBA (indolebutyric acid) rooting hormone. Apply the hormone using a fine-tipped paintbrush or cotton swab.

Insert the hormone-coated end of the blue daze cutting into the rooting container using the prepared planting hole. Press the sand mixture firmly against the stem.

Drizzle water around the base of the blue daze cutting to settle the medium against the stem. Add water only after the surface of the medium dries out slightly.

Place the potted blue daze cutting outdoors under high, light shade. Cover the pot with a 2-gallon plastic freezer bag to maintain a warm, humid environment around the cutting.

Lift the plastic freezer bag and mist the blue daze cutting twice a day to keep the leaves hydrated and fresh. Mist with an atomizer or a spray bottle capable of producing very fine mist.

Check for roots in four to six weeks. Remove the freezer bag after rooting. Transplant the rooted blue daze cutting into a 4-inch pot filled with a mix of half potting soil and half sand.

Grow the blue daze in its new pot for another month or two before transplanting it into the garden. Keep it under partly sunny conditions with weekly 1-inch waterings.

Move it to the garden once new growth emerges. Acclimate the plant to direct sun over the coarse of one week, then transplant it into a sunny bed with sandy soil. Space multiple blue daze plants approximately 2 feet apart.
