UFC news: Israel Adesanya blames flabby pec at UFC 253 on ‘smoking too much weed’
Israel Adesanya has revealed the reason for his flabby pectoral muscle was due to ‘smoking too much weed’ in the build up to UFC 253 in September.
Following his commanding second round victory over Paulo Costa on Fight Island, many fans and other fighters noticed how odd Adesanya’s pectoral muscle looked and claimed ‘The Last Stylebender’ was using steroids.
In addition, UFC’s Jon Jones was quick to point out Adesanya’s oddly shaped pectoral and claimed his rival was ‘growing breasts.’
Adesanya, however, quickly refuted these claims and denied that he has ever used any performance-enhancing drugs.
Having gone through a few medical tests, the UFC doctor shared with Adesanya that it could be caused by him smoking marijuana when out of competition.
The UFC middleweight champion told told Ariel Helwani (as per the Middle Easy):
“That’s not me. Skills pay the bills.
“To be honest, it might have just been unhealthy living a little bit. Like smoking weed. That’s what the doctor from the UFC said.
“He said I need to stop, but I’m not stopping I’m just going to slow down.”
It is worth noting that Adesanya has never failed a drug test during his spell with UFC.
The Nigerian-born Kiwi currently boasts an impressive 20-0 record in MMA and is reportedly looking to move up to light heavyweight to become a two-weight champion.
UFC President Dana White, meanwhile, admitted this week that the rules are being loosened around fighters smoking marijuana for out of competition testing following a number of recent suspensions, including welterweight Niko Price and lightweight Kevin Croom.
White did, however, insist that fighters should continue to be tested for the drug in-competition:
“You can’t let somebody go into the ring high. It just can’t happen, you know?
“But we’re trying to… loosen it up. But at the same time, you can’t have guys showing up high.”
'The Last Stylebender' beat Paulo Costa but went viral on Twitter for a very different reason
