I’ll be in Amsterdam for three days with my 11 year old son. I was thinking of doing a half day or one day tour outside of Amsterdam to visit the windmills, shoemaker, cheese factory. Do you have any recommendations?

Lindbergh is one of the companies that organizes day tours.

For example the Country Side tour, this tour will take you to Volendam and Marken. Both are nice little towns. If you look up Volendam and Marken here at TA you will get an impression.

I have no personal experience with any of these tours. I personally prefer to go by myself. In case you would like to do so you can look up Zaanse Schans. It is a little museum town, like an open air museum with Windmills, cheesemaking, clogmaking and so on. Here you can get an impression on how people lived here hundreds of years ago. You can take bus 391 from Amsterdam Central towards Zaanse Schans, it will take about 40 minutes. Admission to Zaanse Schans is free of charge however you have to pay a small fee to see the windmills from the inside.
